Palin and Perry endorsed TARP also. Which of the candidates currently running opposed it?

Perry never endorsed TARP. After the first TARP was voted down, and before the 2nd was written, he co-signed a letter from the Republican GOvernor’s association (he was the president) and the DGA which asked Congress to go back and act for the good of the country. Some have argued that TARP was the only thing on the table, but it had just been voted down, so it could well be they were looking for something DIFFERENT.

And right after TARP passed, Perry co-authored an editorial clearly opposing the TARP bailouts. Cain has acknowledged that his support for TARP was a mistake, but he actively pushed for it. All Perry did was write a letter urging congress to do SOMETHING, a letter with no indication that TARP was what was wanted.

.
Weak argument, in Palin’s case anyway, since she had to hew to the McCain position in her interviews. Perry will not be an issue in this election.

Are you really saying that because Palin and Perry endorsed it that Cain was right to do so? Palin and Perry have their own problems, and are certainly not the end-all be-all of constitutional conservatism, but even if they had been their entire political careers, it wouldn’t have made TARP constitutional or even smart policy.

Also, Cain said in last night’s debate basically had as his response “Yeah, I shilled for it, but I didn’t like the way the bailout was administered!” Having the common sense to understand that granting unlimited, unchecked authority to anyone, including the former chairman of Goldman Sachs, might be a bad idea in the first place ought to be a requirement for the GOP primary winner.

Bachmann and Paul certainly opposed it.
