After the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in December, 1979, President Jimmy Carter told the world that it had "made a more dramatic change in my own opinion of what the Soviets' ultimate goals are than anything they've done in the previous time I've been in office."
By then, of course the Carter Administration was in extremis. Jimmy Carter's lesson was learned far too late. But the cost to the United States -- and its allies around the world -- of President Carter's learning curve was high indeed.
We have just gone through a three-year Presidential learning curve again.
One wonders, therefore, what President Barack Obama makes of the revelation this week that Iran's Revolutionary Guards planned to assassinate the Saudi Arabian ambassador... and to attack the Saudi and Israeli embassies in DC? The world's leading state sponsor of terror attempted to hire the Zetas, Mexico's most murderous drug cartel, to carry out attacks in the American capital. If successful, those attacks would have killed hundreds of U.S. citizens as collateral damage.
This should spell, in many ways, the death of the last illusion of this most unqualified of modern American presidents. It has turned out, after over a decade of vehement Democratic denials, to be a Dick Cheney World after all.
How that reality must sting this proud man.

The best way for this President to show his patriotism and earn himself a positive legacy in history would be to spare his successor the necessity of dealing with Iran.
Wow - a whole lot of assuming goin' on...
The assumption that the Republicans won't find a way to lose the next election.
The assumption that Barry-O is aware of his political situation.
The assumption that Barry-O cares about "showing his patriotism".
The assumption that Barry-O cares about his legacy.
The assumption that Barry-O would do something for the benefit of someone besides Barry-O.

Obama is the boy who cried “Hope”.
He’s got nothin’. NOTHIN’.
That this isn’t frightening to the Occupy Wall Street crowd only tells me that they see themselves in him—someone in over his head—and they don’t care. It’s more important to FEEL and SAY (or read) the right things than to be seen as cold and calculating...like a mean daddy who won’t give you everything you ask for, and who may even suggest you get a job.

For the rank and file Occupy Wall Street crowd, the reason it doesnt frighten them is that they have no idea it is even happening.
Most of the Occupy Wall Street crowd is there for the party and their only glimpse of world affairs is what they read on the placards of their fellow marchers.
Listen to the news caste interviews of these marchers and they have only the most simplistic understanding of the issues the demonstration deals with. Foreign affairs are foreign to these people.
These are Obamas people the thoughtfully ignorant.
When I talk to Obama people (I'm surrounded by them up here in Boston) I wonder if we're living in the same reality. They are seriously deficient--one of them who was arguing about the "Republican congress" kept blinking and looking perplexed when I mentioned Boehner's name. Finally, she had to admit she didn't know who that was.
Quick, let’s send 100 US troops to Africa...and release the news late Friday night when nobody’s paying attention. Anything else I’d write would get me kicked off.
She probably watches HLN while she gets ready for work to keep up on current events.
All the news thats fit to repeat 4 times an hour.
All the news thats fit to repeat 4 times an hour.
Indeed--it's a hypnosis loop.
Not to mention the assumption that the U.S. can afford to expand the Empire (or even keep the one it already has).
