Are you tipping enough when you go out to eat? The San Francisco restaurant industry apparently doesn’t think so. A column from Ed Arnow of the Contra Costa Times reports that “there’s a move on” among local restaurant workers to “make 25% the standard tip in San Francisco.” Arnow says that several “high-class restaurants” have signed on to the idea, though he doesn’t list which ones—or, for that matter, how the restaurants would impose this new standard.

My too. My standard is 15% (plus round up to the nearest dollar). If service sucks at the fault of the waiter, I’ll drop it to 10%. If service is excellent, I’ll bump it to 20%. If it is exceptional, I will go higher. Only twice in my life have I had service so bad I went below 10%. One time I didn’t leave a tip and one time it was so bad I had to leave a penny for insult. 90% of the time it is either 15% or 20%.

Years ago I used to eat at a certain restaurant that did not add a gratuity to the bill. Then one day after eating there, I saw that a 15% charge had been added. I called over the waiter and asked what it was. He said it was tip. I replied that there had never been one in the past and that I would not pay this one. He said that I had to. I refused, and he threatened to call the manager. I said, “Yes, would you please”? The manager threatened to call the police if I did not pay. I said, “Yes, would you please”? The manager backed down from that. I said, “I will never be forced to pay a gratuity, and there are other restaurants in town. I am a repeat customer; do you want me to go elsewhere”? He invited me to come back, which I later did. I don’t know if other patrons had to pay after that, but I never did. The manager never forgot my name, either.
Big deal, I always tip good service at 25%. If you don’t then there’s a word for you!
Are you serious? Wait staff receive less than half minimum wage as a base. If they give you good service and you don’t tip at least 18% you’re not fit company for civilized life! Try waitressing and see how you like it.

San Francisco restaurants are overpriced as it is. This is about restaurants wanting to give a tax free raise.
They receive less than half because they benefit from tips. But 25% mandatory? I have waited tables. I’ve been a bus boy. I’ve been a dish washer. I decided that it would not meet my financial goals to stay in such a profession. I tip well, but I don’t want it to be mandatory.
Many years ago we were on a band trip to Myrtle Beach and decided to eat at a nice steakhouse near our motel. There were about a dozen or more of us teenagers in the group. When we got to the door, this short little woman with a big attitude and a neck brace announced, “I’m giving you my best waitress, and I expect you to tip her highly.”
After a delicious and fun meal where we traded places and trailed cheese across the table and told her there was a mouse, we left her a good tip. . . ALL the change we had in our pockets and purses. It was quite a mound in the center of the table. I’m sure it was at least 25% if not more.
The waitress was a good sport, and worth every dime — literally. On the other hand, I know why the manager was wearing the brace.
You are a libertarian. You want people to kiss your arse and you figure you can get it there at that drinking establishment and still be a cheap bassturd... Do I have that right? I tip 15% in case you care and am not a libertarian.
Matter I don’t like all that master-servant jazz so I prefer buffets and I leave 15% tips there
Whenever I see something like this, I never leave a tip. In "sit down" restaurants, I will leave a tip as long as the service isn't miserable, and for really outstanding service, I'll leave a 20% tip. If it's really outstanding service from a cute waitress, it could be as high as 25%, but I digress.
Because these people depend on tips as a portion of their wages, restaurants are allowed to pay them an hourly wage of just over $2 an hour. For people working in self service fast food, including drive throughs, that's not the case.

If tipping becomes mandatory, then the IRS will up the reporting in SF from 15% to 25%. (since it is mandatory and uniform) This means the payroll tax wil ALSO go up.
This means the restaurant owner contribution will also go up.
Ultimatly in order to have mandatory 25% tip, someone will have to be fired.
I don’t want people to kiss my ass, if they can’t live off the wages they are PAID to serve me and my friends, when I’m polite to EVERY service person unless they are being a total pr*ck, then they should look for a better job. I will tip if the waiter is friendly AND provides EXCELLENT SERVICE. Meaning, they are at my table / stool every 10-20 minutes asking me if I need anything, engaging in small talk, etc. Most waiters don’t do this and expect tips just for performing their job at the minimum required level. I’d say 95% of waiters/bartenders expect tips, just because they are serving you, not because they are providing excellent service. I understand you’re probably a waiter/waitress, and you have to deal with assholes all day, etc. etc. I don’t treat service people like garbage, but I get minimal requirements from about, as I said 95% of waiters/bartenders. You go the extra mile, you deserve a tip.
Being a cheap bastard? Ya, you pay 8 dollars for a small glass of rum and coke and then call yourself a cheap bastard.
I just fork over the 15% and forget about anything else.
The Subway restaurants all have tip jars. If I have a big order(Which is hardly ever)I’ll leave a one dollar tip.But they get minimum wage,so why do they need a tip?
