Not sure on excerpt policy, but recall something about Guardian being bad, so no excerpt.

KEYWORDS: catastrophism; eruption; iceland; katla; volcano
Katla has followed Eyjafjallajokull every time in recorded history, if I recall correctly. If it goes, it is a game-changer for northern europe, potentially. Tephra from previous eruptions found in norway was substantial, makes the previous volcano look almost trivial.

I just got back from Iceland and the folks there were concerned and have been since EFJ blew her gaskets last summer. It is very very serious concern over there.

The last time it went off in the 1600’s, Europe suffered a mini ice age.

They were already expecting a cold winter for Europe. That certainly wont help.

The Laki fissure eruption in 1783 may have disrupted European farming so much that it could have helped precipitate the French Revolution. At least if this happens in winter, it won’t destroy crops, and Europe has much better heating systems now.

When a volcano blows, it has the potential to spew ash and lava.

International Business Times reports:

Iceland’s Katla Volcano Eruption Imminent: Could Surpass Last Year’s Eruption

Iceland's Katla Volcano, which has a magma chamber that is ten times the size of Eyjafjallajokull, is showing signs of an imminent eruption.

Experts are saying that should Katla erupt, the consequences could be disastrous for Europe as it could spew an ash cloud that will turn day into night. In comparison to last year's Eyjafjallajokull's eruption which grounded planes last year and cost the aviation industry nearly $2 billion dollars, Katla's could wreak havoc across Europe. The last time Katla erupted in 1918 it spewed ash for more than a month, killed off livestock and flooded surrounding farmlands from the melted ice-sheet that covered the volcano.

Now, scientists have detected small earthquakes around Katla and seismologists are warning the population to brace for the eruption. The earthquakes have been steadily growing in strength, just last week a magnitude 4 earthquake was detected. Katla usually has a large eruption twice in a century. It is long overdue for another one, seismologists say.

Volcano and ozone hole couldn’t possibly be related. No, only human activities cause environmental and weather changes.

Iceland itself is being split..right down the middle..it sits atop the Mid-Atlantic volvanic ridge....you can see miles long fractures in iceland from the air.

The Laki explosion, by some estimates, killed over 25% of the population...if something similar happened, they might have to evacuate a good portion of the country.

And, oh yeah...that's like 10,000x MORE global warming than anything man could, or has, done.

possibly the most dramatic plate-separation-related thing in Iceland I have seen is a point in myvatn right as you are leaving the area to the east (between the lake and the fumaroles over the hill) where the hill is visibly separated down the middle. Take a hill and pull it apart 10 meters in the center. It gets the point across better than larger-scale areas where the rift separation is visible. Thingvellir is too big visually to get the scale of the process.

Yeah, a katla-scale eruption, historically leads to governments falling and wars breaking out.

around 6 times in 2001-2004, all tourism. Would rent a car and drive, find a place to stay, saw an awful lot of the navigable roads in the country. Only places I didn’t get to were the westfyords (northwest) and the central part of the country, which is uninhabited and inaccessible in winter, when I generally went.
