The same Art Laffer who didn’t see the recent economic collapse coming?
Honestly of this herd, I’d probably take Gingrich... though I would really like to see someone else in the race... Cain is interesting, but not sure he’s got what it takes to win an election, I kind of see him getting the tea party folks who all glommed onto Perry only to find out he wasn’t remotely fully baked.. now they have jumped to Cain.. I personally am not convinced he’s fully baked either.
Newt’s got his past and deamons, but we know what they are, and I don’t know if enough time has passed that he could overcome the negativity of his past vilifications, but maybe it has. There is definitely an “ANYONE BUT ROMNEY” segment, and I count myself amont them, but I am not sold or enthusiastic about any of the offerings currently.
I’d really not have to be forced to vote for “Obama Light” come election day, and if Romney is the canidate that is the only option.. Romper Room or Romper Room Light. Now yes I know Romney is not Obama in terms of his arrogance or personality, and certainly not an ideological socialist like Obama, but he sure as hell is not a fundamental conservative, or remotely close, and has shown that while he may have an R beside his name, and may have conservative philosophies in some areas, he will govern from a more leftest viewpoint that I want.
Even if we assume the Paul followers will never vote for anyone but Paul (9.6%), that still leaves 27.5% of the votes to be divided between Cain and Romney as the other candidates drop out.
Cain's name recognition is still around 60%.
Romney's name recognition is a little over 80%.
Cain's lead can only widen, unless he makes a major mis-step.
ditto!
Thanks, BD, for one of the best pings you’ve ever sent me—which is saying something!
Thank YOU, FUE, for that great analysis! I read every word, and it was fascinating. I have a much better picture of what’s going on now. Cain is on a roll—as well he should be. He’s the best of the lot in the same sense that Secretariat was the best the year he won the Triple Crown.
As an aside, I have a very, very bad attitude toward RealClearPolitics. They come across as completely indifferent to a poll’s integrity or methodology; if somebody puts it out there, they average it in. Polls are taken that clearly favor Dems out of all proportion, and RCP treats them w uncritical respect. There was the case of that polling firm that KOS had to fire, because they cooked the books in favor of Dems. RCP had meekly accepted all their wildly skewed results, and after the fraud was exposed nothing whatsoever appeared on RCP acknowledging they had been bamboozled. Your analysis is great and I really appreciate it, but my opinion of RCP remains slug-belly low. They are not neutral, fair or honest brokers.
This is good, but it's not what's meant by "political experience". The next GOP president will need the ability to persuade/push Congress to go against its instincts and do the right thing. Can Cain do this? We have no idea. As far as I can tell, he has no real-world experience getting his way with people who have the power to tell him to take a hike.
Thanks for your courteous reply. Many on this board with any differences, lambaste each other...not my play, nor yours.
I like Cain also. A breath of fresh air who hasn’t even peaked yet.
It’s important for conservatives to coalesce around a single anti-Romney candidate.
Rick Perry is my first choice for PRESIDENT but I realize he is not a viable CANDIDATE.
For the sake of conservative unity against Romney, I am now supporting Herman Cain, despite my reservations.
I strongly hope Cain makes it clear that 999 is not set in stone and that he, as a candidate, is bigger than a single tax package that he currently happens to support.
Cain looks like the man at this point and if conservatives unite around him all the money and organization the RINOs have cant stop him.I agree.
As for Cain's electability vs Obama... whatever his chances would be, they are greater than Romney's.
Romney is a sure loser to Obama.
Romney's PURPOSE (as was McCain's) is to lose to Obama.
I wish Perry had made the grade. I strongly believe he would make the best President. But he's a non-starter.
So I'm going with Cain.
I never, ever miss an opportunity to take a shot at ol’ RuPaul, the Surrender Monkey.
Herman Cain is my guy, but I wouldn’t mind if Michelle Bachmann, Rick Santorum, or Newt Gingrich won, either.
Ricardo Perry, Jon Huntsman (Who ?), Myth Rommney, and RuPaul......No support from me whatsoever in the Primary.
“If anyone from FreeRepublic vote against a man because he’s not a career politician, then they’re bogus.”
AMEN!
“who can stand toe to toe with bill clinton, look him in the eye, and reduce him to a stammering, stuttering fool”
.... Monica Lewinsky for President?
Thanks to people like you constantly trashing and smearing Governor Perry and uninformed voters on this site believe you. Don’t put too much stock in polls this far out.
If Perry is so low, then surely you can stop trashing him. I have not see any such polls though. Probably just more of your smears.
Well, looks like we know the limit now of Cain vs Perry.
Perry won a LA poll, 24 Perry, 22 Cain 17 Romney.
As I predicted, Cain is second in the Perry states. :D
Two months ago, Perry was +14 in LA.
Romney’s still up by 20 though in New Hampshire. Cain’s at 20 percent and second there as well. Cain’s increased his support there from 4 percent 3 weeks ago to 20 percent now.
I see you’re attacking Conservatives again with your garbage and whining. Get lost, n00b, and take your RINO open borders apologists with you.
I’m not too keen on the Sales Tax but let’s assume that 999 could be implemented would it be better than our current mess of a tax code? Almost certainly. The tax code would fit in one thin book not 1000s of pages and several volumns.
Does it decrease political power to use the tax code as a weopon to reward and punish? Yes. Does it go as far as we should no but there is a hunger for the tax code to be revamped and Cain is the only one addressing this and his idea is probably the best one that has any chance of ever becomming reality at this point.
Those corps who use loopholes like Obama’s GE would have to pay 9% regardless. Coporations that currently pay more than 9% would see their taxes reduced as well as they would be able to get rid of legions of tax layers. All of that is a very good thing.
Most of the middleclass who pay less overall taxes under Cain’s plan given that Payroll taxes would be gone except for a flat 9%. Tax time of course wouldn’t be so joyous I know given their would be no hopes and joy from the generous government giving your money back to you but I digress.
The sales tax I believe is the hardest thing to buy into though I believe that it is problem the best from of taxation given that it applies most to those that consume the most and everyone from bottom up pays as they should.
If the choice is between a flater simpler system and the current system 999 wins every time.
I do think that there is a danger with adding a national sales tax without a constitutional ammenement to explicitly restrict how taxes can and can not be levied to keep a future Democrat from morphing 999 into a European style taxe system just as bad or worse than our current one.
Herman Cain is a good candidate and he has a lot of other positives. He could very well take a big enough chunk of African Americans to make Obama’s re-election an impossibility. Right now it is truly nearly impossible as it is. All you have to do is look at the independent numbers versus undecides and right track wrong track numbers. If the election were held today Obama would lose in a landslide against almost any of the current candidates. Right now most national polls have large numbers of undecideds as they always do this far out and they almost never go for the incumbent under these conditions.
