The cold is coming -- and they know it.
As the Occupy Wall Street protesters head into their fourth week, the camp is preparing to dig in for the long haul. Saturday, thoughts were turning to basic human needs and ways to plan and strategize for the challenges ahead.
At Saturday's 9 a.m. coordination meeting, representatives on the numerous task forces dealt with the need for more donations of sleeping bags, ground pads and shoes. Right now there's an oversupply of socks, T-shirts and thermal blankets.
"The cold is definitely a concern for all of us," Olivia Nole-Malpezzi, 18, of Rochester said later. "We definitely need to prepare for the winter, mentally and physically. Donations are everything to us."
The challenges aren't deterring one Long Island protester.
"It's important," said Roy Sharkey, 51, of St. James. "I want this to be effective and result in some kind of change. I want to make a statement that's loud and clear and right, for my children," said the father of two, a carpenter and part-time musician now on disability.
Also discussed at the coordination meeting were compost, recycling, funding, and expanding the kitchen area to accommodate food donations.

I just checked out the live stream video and they’re doing that same weird repetition crap.
It would seem that sleeping bags, in that area, are a valuable “commodity”. hmm.
the longer they protest,
the less obama’s chance to win the presidency.
Unbelievable. There is such a need to donate these items to the truly needy and homeless. Sign of the times.
We need an early Nor’ easter snow storm to move in, they will scatter like the rats they are seeking shelter
“the longer they protest,
the less obamas chance to win the presidency.”
Yup, an ad showing Obumble saying how he ‘understands them’, followed by a shot of them crapping in the street should do it.
Its beautiful here today. 80 degrees and sunny.
Unfortunately Michigan weather goes schizophrenic this time of year.
pray for rain!
Remember the Orange Revolution in Kiev, Ukraine?
If these people in Manhattan are serious, they can continue on for quite some time as long as they continue to get new bodies rotating into their protest zone.
Same people who developed the strategies for the Orange Revolution are based in NY/NJ and are running most of the behind the scenes IT work for the organizers of OWS.
It is still possible that a judge will strike down the NYPD bureaucratic ruling restricting the use of tents in the city during protests, it’s also possible there will be increasing support from the food services industry to support a larger number of protestors. There are a lot of commercial kitchens in the city that are underutilized due to the recession, anonymous donors could very well step up and hire them out for catering services, do the same for sanitation and other basic needs.
food street vendors showed up in Tahrir Square, the push carts will show up around Zuccotti Park soon enough.
Shut them down? Heck, no.
Let them freeze their hineys. Find out what living without fossil fuels feels like.
This should be fun to watch.
My first thought was, “Just wait until those street-blockers meet up with NY snowplows! That should be a sight to behold!!”
There's your problem missy, you people are leeches.
I wonder how many sleeping bags it would take for each of u to buy to create a shortage?
Excellent, perhaps some plague or dysentery will crop up with these pigs before long with the unsanitary conditions.
After all, there are only so many police cars you can crap on.
There is a big Rubbermaid plant here.
Talk about a sweatshop.
You just know that those plow drivers will direct the snow right over top of them. The parks are used in the winter for excess snow on the streets.
Go home now.
Chop wood and lay in your Fuel oil for the winter.
My word, these people are stupid.
Gosh since they are cooking out there like that I could see how easily food poisoning could happen....will not be fun if everyone has both ends erupting....
They are idiots. It’s getting cold, go south for the winter. Atlanta has a financial district.
I am sure the Mayor of Atlanta would love to have y’all for a few months.
