Apple iPhone 4S Event: Live
The Telegraph (London) ^ | 10/4/11 | Shane Richmond and others

Posted on 10/04/2011 11:59:44 AM PDT by Haiku Guy

19.44 The show's over. Tim Cook is "incredibly proud". Stick around as we round up the reaction, which appears to be generally underwhelmed.

19.43 Some prices and release dates are here. There will be a 16, 32 and 64GB model, released in seven countries including Britain on October 14. Apple will be taking pre-orders from Friday. The US prices are $199, $299 and $399, with a two-year contract. The iPhone 4 will drop to $99.

19.33 Despite Apple's protestations that the iPhone 4S is revolutionary, it looks like the markets were hoping for an iPhone 5. Apple stock is currently down more almost 2 per cent, while the Dow Jones is down 1.1 per cent.

As the title says, looks like the rumoured iPhone 5 was all smoke. Apple came out with an update to the iPhone 4, called the iPhone 4S. It has some nifty new features, but looks just the same.

I’m happy enough with the new features, as I’m nearing the replacement cycle on my current 3GS.

Brief run-down of the upgrades over the basic 4:

* Dual core A5 processor, up to 2x as fast CPU
* Dual core graphics processor, up to 7x faster graphics
* 8 megapixel camera; faster, sharper, more light and contrast, improved filters
* 1080p HD video recording with image stabilization
* Siri natural language assistant
* GSM and CMDA capable, no different models for different networks

And that’s on top of all of the iOS5 upgrades. So, it doesn’t matter if they call it a 4S or a 5, it’s still a massive improvement over the current model.

With all the new features and the graphics and core processor updates it could have easily been a full version. I think they didn’t call it “5” is because there isn’t a new package.

As the title says, looks like the rumoured iPhone 5 was all smoke.

Huh?

The title is "Apple iPhone 4S Event: Live"

Do you really think the iPhone 5 is all smoke?

Everybody I read figured that the iPhone 5 isn't going to be ready until Jan-Feb: that would depress Christmas sales of the 4. So they came out with this improvement to generate some Christmas sales.

The iPhone 5 will be here.

That doesn't even make sense. If everyone knows the 5 is coming out soon, it's going to hurt sales of the 4S. If sales are going to be depressed, you would want it to be the older phone, not a new one.

but this is October, a long time after the original iphone 4. Apple doesn’t release new phones every few phones unless they’ve really changed their business model.

it doesn’t make sense that anyone will buy iphone5 if they know iphone6 is coming out soon (sarcasm)

“So, in spite of the many mockups that circulated online, and “new cases” that were “revealed,” the iPhone 4S looks exactly the same as the iPhone 4.”

yeah I thought they’d get rid of all the bezel and have a much bigger screen in the same form factor. That would’ve been interesting. Not everyone wants to be stuck with a 3.5” screen though I’m sure it is still fine with many people.

The new 4s has some nice features for sure, but overall the event was a big yawner.
- All the trendies will be disapointed because if you buy one, no one will know it unless you tell them.
- Do I really need 4x faster graphics on a 3” screen at my age?
- the Iphone 4 was super hyped for how great the camera was, but it still only works really well outdoors in full light. If this new cam fails to deliver, I won’t believe them anymore.
- Why does the new assistant sound like it could be named after a female relative of Mohamed Atta ? I feel like the phone should come with a hijab accessory or something.
- All the blow by blow web sites were swamped, so everyone saw this and if many feel like I do, it was a medicore day for Apple.

Siri is named after the original app Apple bought to bring it to the iPhone 4s
