Washington (CNN) When news broke in the national media over the weekend that Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perrys family had leased a property in his native Texas known by the name Niggerhead, Perrys campaign swiftly responded. But so far, almost no one has taken the opportunity to slam Perry over the propertys controversial name. Instead, the reaction has been subdued - even from the White House and from some of Perrys most prominent and outspoken rivals for the GOP nomination.
Mitt Romney, Perrys chief rival in the GOP race, said Monday in a cable news interview that he found the term offensive and thought most people view the term as such. Then, Romney suggested that the matter should be taken up with Perry.
Also speaking Monday, Herman Cain, one of Perrys surging rivals for the GOP nomination, dialed back his earlier criticism of Perry.
"I really don't care about that word. They painted over it," Cain said, referring to a sign painted on a rock at the property the Texas governor once leased.
The matter "doesn't bother me at all," Cain added, emphasizing that he was satisfied by Perry's explanation of it and that he was "not playing the race card. I am not attacking Gov. Perry."
Rival and fellow Texan Rep. Ron Paul wanted to talk about other things. "I have no idea what the circumstances were, Paul said when asked about the controversy while campaigning in New Hampshire Monday, but in this day and age to try to turn something around and make him say that he endorsed using that word - I think we should worry about the wars, and assassinations, the economy, not trying to find out some way that you're going to blame Perry.

He implied we are racists when he said we have problems with people’s last names.
Another attempt by the media to sway the slow minded against the Repubs. First the gay soldier, now this. I guess something anti-women will be next, Ho hum.
When did he say anybody was a heartless RACIST?
You lie!
Yeah that must be it. Or because not even liberals believe Perry is a racist. Maybe that’s why it’s not sticking? Kind of hard to argue the guy hates people of color after the last two weeks of conversation spent on immigration.
Just suck it up. Cain stepped out of line. he isn’t perfect. Now I’ll admit I’m tempted to treat him the way some of you have been treating Perry and partly because anyone I think may be too close to Romney I want destroyed. But I’m resisting. I won’t let his recent positions go unmentioned but not writing him cimpletely off either. Romney, now he’s pure unadulterated slime. It’s too bad conservatives are dedicated to giving him the nomination. I’d take the very flawed in Perry, Cain or a few others over him in a heartbeat but seem to be alone in that.
Desperate? Herman Cain drops race-baiting bombs and you call me desperate? Too, too, funny.
I’m not desperate at all, since I’ve got no horse in this race. It’s just so disheartening to see Free Republic become DU’s echo chamber, that’s all. But, hey, if you’re all comfy-cozy cuddling up to race baiters, knock yourself out ; )
You lie! <<
Really? I guess Mark Steyn is a liar too, then, when he said this:
Rick Perry has basically adopted the Democratic line now on the whole illegal immigration issue, Steyn said. He says that you know, if you want to demonize him for providing education to the children of illegal immigrants at in-state tuition rates, then you dont have any heart. Thats a Democrat talking point. When he says, if youre opposed to what he did with immigration, its because youre not comfortable. Youre some uptight WASP-y type with a name like, I dont know Gary Johnson. Youre some uptight WASP-y type with a name like Gary Johnson who cant handle that we now have fellows called José in this country.
Thats a Democrat talking point. That kind of cheap kind of cheap racism is a Democrat talking point.
>>Herman Cain drops race-baiting bombs<<
Again, your hyperbole makes you look desperate. It is amusing though.
>>Its just so disheartening to see Free Republic become DUs echo chamber, thats all. <<
Again, your hyperbole is hilarious.
Wow! Your wit simply astounds and confounds me...
Are you saying Cain didn’t play the race card? If not, what exactly is it that he did? Cain is either A) An idiot, or B) a race baiter. There really is no other option.
...Not nearly as amusing as watching you cuddling with the race baiters, though. Keep it up - and say “Hi” to all your fellow race baiting lovers in DU land!
Hey Macaca Post, why not send some reporters to Perry’s travel office? Ask them if he’s traveled to Niger.
Hey Macaca Post, why not investigate if Perry ever wore a coonskin cap?
Hey Macaca Post, why not investigate if Perry ever read any novels with a character named Sam Spade?
Hey Macaca Post, why not investigate if Perry ever slurred his speech while talking about the NY Knickerbockers?
Cain did not intentionally race-bait. But it was disturbing to hear him say the word outloud on network TV. That had a touch of arrogance, as in “You can’t say that word, Amanpour, but I can because I’m black”. He needs to tone down his tendency to jump the gun on unsubstantiated rumors. Good for him that he walked it back today.
If he put the word "racist" in Perry's mouth, yes, he's a liar, as well.
Perry didn't call anybody a "racist." Period! Admit it!
Amen. If Christie gets in, that is good for Perry. GO CHRISTIE! Jump on in. The water is fine.
The last time I ignored a US election, I wound up losing a son - so not on your life.
Nobody cares what bothers you. It’s who you bother that bothers me. Bother, bother, bother.
