Washington (CNN) When news broke in the national media over the weekend that Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perrys family had leased a property in his native Texas known by the name Niggerhead, Perrys campaign swiftly responded. But so far, almost no one has taken the opportunity to slam Perry over the propertys controversial name. Instead, the reaction has been subdued - even from the White House and from some of Perrys most prominent and outspoken rivals for the GOP nomination.
Mitt Romney, Perrys chief rival in the GOP race, said Monday in a cable news interview that he found the term offensive and thought most people view the term as such. Then, Romney suggested that the matter should be taken up with Perry.
Also speaking Monday, Herman Cain, one of Perrys surging rivals for the GOP nomination, dialed back his earlier criticism of Perry.
"I really don't care about that word. They painted over it," Cain said, referring to a sign painted on a rock at the property the Texas governor once leased.
The matter "doesn't bother me at all," Cain added, emphasizing that he was satisfied by Perry's explanation of it and that he was "not playing the race card. I am not attacking Gov. Perry."
Rival and fellow Texan Rep. Ron Paul wanted to talk about other things. "I have no idea what the circumstances were, Paul said when asked about the controversy while campaigning in New Hampshire Monday, but in this day and age to try to turn something around and make him say that he endorsed using that word - I think we should worry about the wars, and assassinations, the economy, not trying to find out some way that you're going to blame Perry.

That rock won’t hunt.
Poor thing, you’re still hung up on that Romney talking point.
If that is the case, they should be ashamed. Christie is not a conservative, but another liberal. The GOP LEADERSHIP, needs to let the voters choose the candidate.
Start at 2:40 mark.
Actually Chris Wallace from Fox News Sunday asked the question first and got the most heated answer. Wallace seems to have it in for Perry.
Ron Paul even with his riciulous position on foreign matters has more class then Romney. I won’t vote for that slime.
You are clearly ignorant. I don’t know why you even bother posting on this site. He has been a Republican for much longer than the RINO from Texas...Ricardo Perry.
Uhh... That’s when he was a democRAT!
It obviously bugs you no end. lol
>>You do know what a talking point is? Rival campaigns put them out...<<
Wrong. PERRY put out the statement, right out of his big fat flapping yapper.
HEARTLESS racists we are, according to Perry.
You can’t blame somebody else for it. That’s what libs do.
I agree. The rock issue will hurt neither Perry nor Cain.
If the Perry supporters try to suggest that Cain is race-baiting, it will bite them in the butt BIG TIME.
Pitiful and desperate.
What disgraceful comments on Hannity?
I think the dirt they dug up about Perry hasn’t stuck because the Perryettes immediately began throwing it at Herman Cain. (And it won’t stick there either!)
But Mr. Cain is a gentleman. He has good manners.mm He would not speaki to a woman that way.
Herman Cain is either a race baiting boot licker or he’s too stupid to play the game at this level. Either way, he’s disqualified himself. And to see anyone - ANYONE - on Free Republic talk down Cain’s race baiting is disgusting.
>>And to see anyone - ANYONE - on Free Republic talk down Cains race baiting is disgusting.<<
Haha, your hyperbole makes you seem desperate.
“Its the fact he said WE are heartless racists that bothers me most.”
I heard Perry strongly and with feeling imply that we are heartless if we do not support financing college education for resident illegal aliens. That was not an allegation of racism
Illegal alien is not a race, but as a group descriptor can include persons of every race.
Okay, where’s the Life Boy? Your post tells me you don’t possess a quarter of Herman Cain’s IQ.
