Perry Critics Defend Him In Racist Camp Name Furor
Texas Tribune ^ | Oct 3, 2011 | Emily Ramshaw

Even some of Perry's fiercest Texas critics say they do not believe he is racist. They point to his record of appointments as evidence: He appointed the state’s first African-American state supreme court justice, Wallace Jefferson, and later made him chief justice. (Jefferson’s great grandfather was a slave, “sold like a horse,” Perry once said with disgust.) Perry’s former general counsel and former chief of staff, Brian Newby, is black; so is Albert Hawkins, the former Health and Human Services Commissioner who Perry handpicked to lead the massive agency in 2002.

The worst Cain is guilty of in this is “taking the bait.”

If he’s a serious candidate (and I like Cain, a LOT), he needs to learn this quick.

Perry may be a lousy debater, but he does know how to handle the media to his credit.

However, I’m maintaining that Perry OR Cain are both far better than Obama OR Romney, and we’re gonna give ourselves Romney as a nominee if we don’t knock it off.

Rick Perry is an idiot, not a racist.

Yes exactly.Well said.It is all to get ObamneyCare Romney in the lead solidly.Perry’s numbers will jump up.Cain lost my respect for going along with this racist scheme.Cain endorsed Romney in 2008.Palin said she would you betcha be Romney’s VP.They all are a disappointment. The MSM and Obama team love the infighting and schism.Has Cain denounced his Perry disappoints and should have quit hunting there years ago liberal media statement?

There are three main questions here:

1. Was it insensitive? There are many Rick Perry supporters who argue that it is perfectly okay to have a rock at the entrance of your property with the word “Niggerhead” prominently displayed on it. To me, that is pure ignorance. Perry, while defending himself, says that the rock would be highly “offensive,” which is a term beyond “insensitive,” the term Cain used. Perry supporters are taking the opportunity to bash Cain for “playing the race card,” even though “insensitive” is much weaker and more diplomatic than Perry’s term “offensive.”

I don’t think there is much question that it would be both insensitive and offensive to have “Niggerhead” displayed at the entrance to your ranch.

2. How long was the offensive title displayed on the rock? Perry claims his father painted it over soon after they bought the property. Everyone else says it was displayed for many years after and that they thought it was offensive and wondered how someone in politics could be so stupid as to leave it there.

3. Is Rick Perry a racist? Certainly many Texans of Perry’s father’s generation were racists or at the very least insensitive to racial issues. But calling an individual a racist is a strong accusation and I don’t think any candidate, including Cain, has said this. I haven’t seen anyone on FR call Rick Perry a racist. We really don’t know one way or the other.

It is such a strong accusation that we need to give Perry the benefit of the doubt. But it was stupid and offensive and it should be held against him, if the word was displayed at the entrance of his ranch after they purchased it.

Does that help?

It would, if he didn’t also lie about what he said at the same time...

Today: “All I said was the mere fact that that word was there was ‘insensitive.’” Cain responded.

Yesterday: “And since Governor Perry has been going there for years to hunt, I think that shows a lack of sensitivity for a long time of not taking that word off of that rock and rename the place. It’s just a basic case of insensitivity.”

”For him to leave it there as long as he did before I hear that they finally painted over it is just plain insensitive to a lot of black people in this country,” Cain said.

Even if Rick Perry himself had scrubbed that rock clean, someone would’ve complained that it hadn’t been crushed into sand and scattered over the Mariana Trench.

“entrance of your property”

Egregious false statement in first sentence = don’t bother reading further.

The fact that Perry and his camp are being defended, even by his critics, that he isn’t racist, is just keeping the story alive. He should have moved on from it by now as well.

Hopefully, Cain has learned a lesson to look a MSM Gift Horse in the mouth.

Hopefully, as well, Conservatives can get back to pointing out Obama’s negatives.

Paint Creek, Tex. — In the early years of his political career, Rick Perry began hosting fellow lawmakers, friends and supporters at his family’s secluded West Texas hunting camp, a place known by the name painted in block letters across a large, flat rock standing upright at its gated entrance.

“Niggerhead,” it read.

If Rick Perry is racist, then why did he welcome, with open arms, over 100,000 Hurricane Katrina refugees from Louisiana to Texas, most of them African-American.

He was just idiotic for inviting in those lowlifes, but certainly not racist.

The leftards are the racists and their leader Obama is the head witch hunt doctor. Where was the media on Rev Wright? the racist preacher? or on Algore leaving his maid in the car as he family dined in restaurants? as for the confederate flag...I would not apologize or be ashamed of it. As for the American flag...many blacks have refused to honor it...Cassius Clay aka Mohammad Alli for one preferred the black fist salute. Time for the blacks to stop allowing the race card to be played and enjoy the many benefits they have (plus affirmative action, fed job preference, college admissions, subsidized housing etc) by living in America.

Hopefully, Cain has learned a lesson to look a MSM Gift Horse in the mouth.

The only ones who object to what Cain said are Perry supporters, many of whom have claimed here on FR that it is perfectly okay to display the word "Niggerhead" at the entrance to your property.

Cain did the right thing. When asked about it, he said the appropriate thing. He did not call Perry a racist, but diplomatically referred to it as insensitive.

Rick Perry supporters on FR are not helping their candidate in the least bit. When Perry first declared, they flocked to FR, including many new posters who had never been on here before, and bashed Sarah Palin and everything about the Tea Party. Now they are trying to bash Cain, but again it is counter productive. They are just making themselves and their candidate look bad.

Neither Perry nor his family “purchased” the land. They leased it for hunting season.
