Apparently this lease was named many years ago after a field of prolific daisies in the area, which were colloquially called “******heads.”

My grandfather, who was legendary for his generosity and kindness toward the black farm workers he employed, called those flowers "******toes." That's what I thought of when I saw the camp name. It was a different time, 50 years ago.

In the very old days the “black-eyed susan” was also known as a niggerhead. This word has been around since before the Civil War.
