Michael Steele: Rick Perry’s in-state tuition plan for illegal immigrants "very conservative"
The Daily Caller ^ | 09/30/2011 | Nicholas Ballasy

Posted on 09/30/2011 1:51:37 PM PDT by martosko

Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele told The Daily Caller that it was a “very conservative” decision for 2012 Republican presidential candidate Gov. Rick Perry of Texas to give in-state college tuition rates to illegal immigrant students.

“I think it is actually fairly conservative to look at, very conservative, to look at solving the problem in a way that empowers people, gives them opportunities to get out of harms way — fiscally or whatever — and to move the state forward,” he told TheDC during an interview in Washington on Friday.

Why do you think it is a good idea to pay to educate people who can never hold a job in the USA?

No one comes over the border just so they can get in state tuition in Texas.

The US Government refuses to effectively help Texans stop illegals from coming over the border. Once they are here Texas must give them food and education with no questions asked. The US goverment will not deport them so Texas is stuck with them. So maybe Texans feel that their tax money is better spent helping some of these children to be productive rather than just continue to be a ward of the state.

This is a 10 year old law on Texas book. If Texans were upset wirh Perry about it they would not have reelected him. They know this law was put into effect because that is what the majority of the citizens wanted at that time. It was not something Perry forced off on anyone.

If Texans decide this plan is not working, its up to the citizens to ask their legislators to change it.

It is not up to you to decide how Texans spends their money.

I don’t think a wall is a good idea unless they can figure out a way to build it right in the middle of the river. Why give an inch?

70% of the illegals are on some form of welfare last I heard.

That is the reason they stay.

It wouldn’t have mattered, there clearly were the votes there to override any veto. The margin shows it was a very popular measure in TX. I have no idea why but I know this idea is catching on around the country.

What’s your governor doing to get rid of them? Governors can’t deport them.

Yes, their names can be given to the government but thats where the names stay - on a list and nothing is done about it.

OMG!!! That is hillarious. Perry is being given a high five from Steele. Perry is definitely in the gutter. Perfect place for him. I am going to be honest and say that 100 percent loath Perry. He is more slick that the original slick Clinton. Everything he does is nasty and oily.....he is creepy. How people support him is beyond me. Thank God he will not be our candidate.

Get informed.

Perry doesn’t have the choices, doesn’t hold the cards.

Texas just trying to make the best of a bad situation.

If you don’t live in Texas, who cares what you think?

Perry never offered this as a national model.

It doesn’t punish legal citizens anymore than Michigan charging my son out of state tuition does. So you think illegals jump the border with their kids so in 10 years their kids can avoid paying out of state tuition? Hey an illegal graduating from an Arizona high school applying at the university of texas pays out of state tuition too. You bought the Romney spin hook line and sinker and make no mistake it was Romney who brought up that angle you are using.

TEXAS has a good plan.....AND OTHER STATES HAVE THE SAME PLAN. Perry is not alone.

The other idiots with this stupid plan are not running for President. I will give them that at least they are not dumb enough to think they should run for President like Ricky Ricardo Perry. Such a fraud. I bet he wishes he could be illegal. He has such empathy for illegals that his wish is probably to clean out Mexico and get them all up here. Disgusting vulcher that Perry.

Legal residents, illegal residents, and visitors to Texas pay sales tax. There is no income tax.

You're right. Gov. Perry seems to share the same ideology as Gov. Brown of California on this issue. But, calling it a "good plan", I strongly disagree.

Any way you cut it, this can only be seen as an incentive to illegally immigrate. I believe the number of illegal immigrants in our Country is probably around the size of the population of California. Of that growing population, many are dependent on our Government. How can we have a thriving economy while supporting this many additional people? To this Conservative, we can't.

Gov. Perry has been Governor of Texas since December, 2000, under both a Republican and Democrat White House. Yet, illegal immigration has exploded in Texas during his terms. As was proved by Arizona's SB 1070, there are actions a state can take which deter illegal immigration even though it remains a function of the Federal Government.

Perry willingly takes credit for the number of jobs Texas has created, yet continues to refuse to take blame for the illegal immigration growth. Either actions like the Texas Dream Act have contributed to this population growth, Perry is ineffective in dealing with the problem, or Perry truly doesn't see a problem in Texas (or the rest of the Nation) with illegal immigration.

slots at these colleges magically multiply when an illegal alien fills one? Someone is covering the difference between full tuition and discount tuition

Perry is a Fraud?

Please explain.

You toss a lot of crap with nothing to back it up, not even a well considered fact-based opinion.
