When it comes to views on global warming, Oregonians are living in "separate realities" based on political ideology, a new online survey indicates.
Liberals and conservatives do line up on a lack of enthusiasm for coal and affection for energy conservation that knocks down utility bills, the survey commissioned by Oregon's Global Warming Commission found.
The survey wasn't scientific, and likely garnered people with stronger views than a random survey would have. Survey designers recruited participants from 40 Oregon-based groups, including business and environmental organizations.
But the ideological divisions among the roughly 2,250 people who completed the survey earlier this year were stark, confirming "many existing stereotypes," a report to the commission concluded.
More than 80 percent of self-described liberals said they "care deeply" about global warming, versus 6 percent of self-described conservatives and 40 percent of moderates.
About three-quarters of conservatives said they were skeptical when they hear talk of climate change, compared to just 2 percent of liberals and a third of moderates.
Among those who reported seeing physical evidence of climate change, liberals were far more likely to chalk it up to human activity and increased carbon in the atmosphere. Conservatives mostly attributed it to naturally occurring weather patterns.
Given the ideological divide, "communications about evidence may only affect a small subset of moderates," the report concluded.
The survey also found some potential common ground.
Even among those who don't believe anything should be done about climate change, strong majorities said Oregon should strive to get more energy from U.S. sources.
But among all respondents, less than 20 percent of conservatives favored coal -- abundant in the United States -- as a top energy source. Less than 10 percent of liberals and moderates did.
Instead, conservatives favored hydropower, nuclear power and natural gas. Liberals and moderates both liked solar and wind; moderates were more likely to favor hydropower.
On energy efficiency, strong majorities of even those who thought no action on climate change was warranted said they'd be willing to improve efficiency in their homes if it would lower utility bills.
They "quickly lost interest if financial incentives were removed," the report says.
Fuse Insight Labs, Mesh Strategic Partners, consulting firm Cogan Owens Cogan and Angus Duncan, the global warming commission's chairman, helped create or conduct the survey.
The commission began in 2007 after Oregon's Legislature adopted greenhouse gas reduction goals. The goals include cutting greenhouse gases 10 percent below 1990 levels by 2020 and 75 percent by 2050.
Commission members will discuss the report at their Oct. 11 meeting.
>Liberals and moderates both liked solar and wind; <
I grew up in the Pac NW, and 9 months of the year it’s either rain or snow. It’s not a “reality” but another kumbaya fantasy courtesy of leftards.
“Liberals and moderates both liked solar and wind”
In other words they prefer to live in caves and light their own farts for light and heat.
“On energy efficiency, strong majorities of even those who thought no action on climate change was warranted said they’d be willing to improve efficiency in their homes if it would lower utility bills.”
...The translation in the Governor’s mind is that he needs to increase the cost of energy vastly to cement this in the minds of conservatives as a good choice.....
And this is why we conservatives hate Libs!
In other words they prefer to live in caves and light their own farts for light and heat.
They want you and I to die because there might be some animal or insect that lives in the cave and that is more valuable to them. They will continue to live the lifestyle they wish to deny others.
First of all, a "survey" commissioned by a group called Global Warming Commission can be regarded as a "push" poll and essential worthless.
The self-selecting nature of respondents simply reinforces the nature of advocacy based on ignorance. As an example, any informed person who has followed the debate, the frauds and the divisive rhetoric will immediately ask..."What global warming?" and move on to more rational pursuits.
Unfortunely I have a relative who lives in OR. She and her husband are stark raving mad libs. Went to their wedding there. OMG there were about 100 of their type there.
The only saving grace was that one individual supplied the best home made brew I have ever tasted. Also one lady of the wedding party was HOT!
This year we bypassed spring all together and went straight to summer but it hasn’t been as hot as it has in past summers. Nothing worse than a city environmentalists who visit the great outdoors on the weekend and then condescend to tell those of us who live here everyday how we’re mistreating the earth. Part of my livelihood comes from my land. Why the heck would I destroy it?

There’s actually a youtube video of a Marine doing that! My son sent me the link. Didn’t even know such a thing was possible before I saw it.

Does he have a Split Level Cave or a traditional Ranch Cave?
[ More than 80 percent of self-described liberals said they “care deeply” about global warming, versus 6 percent of self-described conservatives and 40 percent of moderates. ]
In other words, the belief in global warming is inversely proportional to the ability to objectively evaluate facts.
lol!
“Also one lady of the wedding party was HOT!”
Was that before or after you had your fill?

Smugly lecturing others on how to live their lives from a position of abject ignorance on the subject being lectured is part and parcel of the core of modern Leftism. Just look at the Obama Presidency for proof.
I grew up in Oregon and it rains 12 months of the year.
You can tell it's summer in Oregon because the rain gets warm. Last year 726 people fell off their bicycles and drowned. The Air National Guard scrambled jets last week when 100's of people called to report a UFO, it was later discovered that the glowing orb hovering over Portland was the sun. I gotta million of 'em...
And with 7 dams on the Columbia, hydro power makes sense. Of course they shouldn't have closed Trojan, but that is a whole other post.
And, how many of these deeply caring people have a clothes line? I suspect, not many. That would impugn the convenience of their clothes dryer, one of the biggest energy hogs in a home.
Whenever my wife & I are socializing and the "go green" subject arises.....that's the 1st question she asks of these libs. "Do you have a clothes line?" The conversation usually ends right there & then.
Your weather may have done that, but just a few miles North (but still slightly below the 49th...), we didn’t get TO summer, it went from a cool spring to a wet fall. I started tomatoes in March that are still only a foot tall, with NO fruit because it’s been so cold. I have to try and move them inside to propagate them, as they are family heirloom seed, and there is no way to replace them if I lose them.
