To listen to the recent Republican Presidential debates, you'd think illegal immigration was the biggest threat to the U.S. economynot to mention to the rule of law, our social fabric and national security. We hate to spoil the political reverie, but the real immigration story these days is how many fewer illegal migrants are trying to get into the land of the free.
That's the news from the Department of Homeland Security, which reports that border apprehensions have dropped to their lowest level in nearly 40 years. For fiscal 2010, arrests were 463,000, down from 724,000 in 2008a one-third decline in two years.

The point is that Perry is strong on enforcement of the border laws and that immigration is the least of the problems facing this country at this time. It ‘s not a matter of “What if” the economy improves.
The country has enough real problems to solve, not the least of which is to get rid of Obama and avoid replacing him with another big government narcissist, like Romney.
Palin is not running. Bachman blew her chances with the Perry attacks and her dissembling over the report that gardisil causes brain damage.
I still like Cain. He at least hasn’t gone on the attack.
That was a Bear Sterns study and it was one of the best and most analytical of the problem.
The number of 11 million has been around since 2003 and is a deception by the establishment as to the true scope of the problem, as bad as 11 million may seem. Do they think that no one has been sneaking into the country in the last 8 years? Immigration agencies even admit to 1 million illegal entries every year, but the establishment would have you think there is no change.
The Bear Sterns study also pointed out that that 11 million illegal group, if amnestied, would be allowed via chain migration to bring in parents, siblings, and children, making the real effect within one generation (25 years) 60-100 million welfare state dependents.
Of course, while your town turns into a Third World hellhole, the moguls on Wall Street will live in even greater luxury in their gated communities, sipping cocktails with their equally rich elected officials.
8 replies and not one person has a problem with your exhortation to shoot illegals.
There is NO "least important problem" facing the country if any problem is an existential one, one that would destroy the country. Illegal immigration is an existential problem - if not fixed, America will soon cease to exist. Do you want to live in a "democracy" like Mexico? That is what is coming. Spend a week in Los Angeles and see what the future holds.
Illegal immigration differs from other existential problems, like war or depression, in that it has a slightly longer time scale, but it is a killer nevertheless. A heart attack can kill you, and cancer can kill you. Is cancer OK with you because it takes a little longer to be fatal?
Perry's cheap shot ("Have you ever been to the border") is hypocritical. Perry doesn't live on the border, either. He doesn't live in Del Rio, or El Paso, or Laredo. He lives in plush luxury in Austin, where he has been on the taxpayer dime for decades. He doesn't have an illegal dorm house next door with 40 people and 20 ladder trucks parked outside; he doesn't have MS 13 graffitti all over his fence; his kids aren't acosted by unlearning gangster students; his neighborhood doesn't see drive by shootings or drunken hit-and-runs.
Conservatives stayed home in 2008 because a John McCain thought more of illegal aliens than of Americans in hopes of getting their votes which went to Obama anyway.
Rick Perry is John McCain with more hair.
You are just flat out wrong.
Like simply not arresting them?
Oh please point out how?
No, the aren’t. You pay for the consequences out of your tax dollars, and leave my paycheck alone. Maybe YOU belong somewhere else, like a socialist welfare state utopia.
You’re the trash who says people need to be stripped of citizenship and deported, boy.
Clients for the welfare state.
Job security for fat assed bureaucrats.
Reliable democratic votes.
Those on our side who enable the current system are fools.
So we should coddle them? Maybe we should build a tent camp for illegals in your backyard while we "work things out".
Do you think Perry can win without Texas?
Before you huff, “Of course he’s going to win Texas” consider this: At one time California was Republican; then using the same approach Perry espouses, CA veered sharply Left, all due to the overwhelming illegals corrupting the voting process at all levels.
Texas is headed the same way, it’s just 10 or 15 years behind.
SO, if Perry were sincere in his beliefs, he would announce and SHOW everyone how he too can win a presidential election without Texas.
Because, if Perry’s views win the day, Republicans will HAVE to win without Texas and California both.
Show us Perry, show us how its done.
How about we just deport you from FR instead? Buh-bye.
Thank you.
I don’t love illegals and even openly say we should limit legal immigration but suggesting that we strip people of citizenship and deport them is more than just a step over the line.
Extra credit question: what percentage of the illegal immigration population currently in our country are employed in agricultural work?
Who on FR is supporting that?
They work in a variety of industries, my reply was directly to the poster who implied that welfare recipients should be “encouraged” to take on this as a form of workfare, not in any way to infer that the only jobs they come here for are agricultural.
Nice try though
