Here’s the tuition table from the Univ. of TX for 2010-2011 and it shows for residents that tuition for 12 hours (kids need time to party and work part time, doncha know) is averaging around $4800-$5000. The tuition for the same number of hours by non-residents might be averaging $10,000-$15,000.

The fees that a college charges in addition to tuition can make the total cost a lot more than that, but AFAIK there is no extra charge for out-of-state students for those. LINK: Required fees include laboratory fees, supplementary fees, incidental fees, the aquatic complex fee, the Gregory Gymnasium renovation fee, the health services building fee, the information technology fee, the international education fee, the library fee, the medical services fee, the recreational sports fee, the registration fee, the student services fee, the student services building fee, and the Texas Union fee.

Perry could have nailed Romney on this point, but maybe he didn't have time in the debate format.

I don't think this Dream Act is fair, because it allows reduced tuition for illegal aliens who have no way of ever being legal, but the legislature passed it fair and square. And if enough Texans agree with me, the law can be changed to require aliens to apply for legal status before they apply for the Dream Act.

The current 2011/12 rates are FAR HIGHER. $17,000 per semester for out of state students (that's $34,000 per annum, not counting summers), and $5,000 per semester for instate ~ or only $10,000 per annum.

Romney's error was in NOT using current year ~ which makes the subsidy level $24,000 per annum!!!!

Several universities provide an estimated cost for housing, et al, and the amount for out of state students is higher than in state. I think that has to do with relative costs of freshman dormitories versus living in town.

But, back to the Romney number ~ it's EVEN HIGHER THIS YEAR!

The people in your legislature are IDIOTS.

I agree that all of the extra fees imposed do significantly increase the cost of attending a university. ....The focus was on tuition, though, and I only picked the Univ. of TX as it is probably the most expensive State school.
