When the Bush team told Rick Perry in 1998 how to run his race against John Sharp for Lt. Gov., Rick Perry said, "Thank you but I'll do it my own way because he knew Democrats would vote for Bush and then cross back and vote for John Sharp (D) unless he ran hard against him. Reports are circulating that the Bush camp said that they'd hold GHW Bush's endorsement unless Perry went easy on his Democrat opponent (Rove wanted to broaden G.W. Bush's planned presidential run in 2000).

Rick Santorum endorsed Arlen Specter because Bush's camp asked him to do it. The man has not been the same since.

Rick Santorum must resent how his political career has ended.

Rick Perry stood up and was his own man. The Bush camp came back for another shot at Gov. Perry in the last (2010) primary for Texas gov. -- Rove and the Bush machine backed Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison in the primary and she lost.

Think you have it right. The key here is what the old man thinks. He imagines himself as the Godfather of the GOP in Texas. Perry was too much his own man,and so GHW is throwing his weight behind Romney.
