The canopy on Galloping ghost is as small as physically possible. The pilot’s head is barely visible under normal circumstances. Nice try, but it won't work. 5-point harness and all that. Something VERY strange was going on.

The location of the trim tab controls on a P-51 are on the left side of the pilot. The Elevator trim control is below the shelf on the left, and the gear control is below that. We'll likely never know, but it's not inconceivable that he was reaching down for the control, or the landing gear lever when that photo was taken.
