Bachmann's Vaccine Panic
gastongazette.com ^ | 9/18/2011 | Steve Chapman

Cancer treatment has made great progress in recent decades, but the tragedy is that so much of our effort to combat this scourge is just that: treatment. Once a disease appears, there is only so much that can be done. It would be far cheaper, more effective and less traumatic to prevent it.

A vaccine for cancer would be a triumph for public health. Did I say “would be”? Actually, it is. Such a vaccine exists for one of the biggest killers of women. But Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., is against it, and she’s not alone.

Two different vaccines block transmission of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes 70 percent of all cervical cancer in this country, as well as most anal cancers and some cancers of the throat, vagina and penis.

Each year, says the National Cancer Institute, more than 12,000 American women are diagnosed with cervical cancer alone, and some 4,000 will die of it. That’s not counting the genital warts HPV can cause.

It’s a nasty but very common bug that the world would be better off without. Universal inoculation would be a huge step toward eradicating it and the suffering it causes.

But there is a big impediment to its use: HPV is sexually transmitted, which makes the vaccine controversial — especially because to achieve maximum effectiveness, it has to be administered before the recipient becomes sexually active. And in this country, 6 percent of youngsters have sex by the age of 13.

I do know, the Dream Act is not a conservative position.

Yes, throw Perry in the briar patch with that one.

Everyone who attacks Perry on that will be viewed as a racist, while Perry will come off to the growing Latino community to be a guy not to be afraid of - particularly since Obama hasn't really turned out too well for Latinos.

On principle, the Dream Act is evil because it embodies the ideas and political favoritism we despise. Nonetheless, this is political calculus that apparently has been successful in previous Perry campaigns. Just Win, Baby.

If you really think this out though, the Dream Act is more symbolism than substance and works splendidly with the Left who deep in their hearts hate Latinos and think they are morons, but their ideology tells them that they are exactly the same as any other demographic in areas that they think matter.

The Left think that with the Dream Act, thousands of Latinos will push aside white kids for those coveted seats in Freshman English. The rest of us know that they will likely wash out of Freshman English as that is what the class is for. Reality says illegal aliens don't have the infrastructure (interpret that as you may) to succeed alongside Americans who have English speaking, educated parents. Furthermore, unless there is a lot of drug money involved, I'm not sure how an illegal alien is going to be able to finance all of those things not underwritten by the Dream Act. How does securing a school loan work without any documentation?

Every time one of you Perry-camp followers trash Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann, you only make me more resistant to the idea of a Perry presidecy. I refuse to participate in the destruction of a Conservative woman because of some puffed-up Texas politican. In that regard, there is no point in posting to me.

I, as a Perry supporter could not agree with you more, with an understanding that the inverse holds true: Every time Bachmann hurls personal attacks and arguments rooted in conjecture at Perry, a lot of people (not just Perry supporters) are more resistant to a Bachmann presidency.

Infighting will give us another weak ticket. If we stick to economy, jobs, debt - and what differentiates the (R) candidates on these issues, then we have already won the election. We cannot afford to hand it to Zero.

ok, I apologize. I don't need to look it up - I will take your word for it. I had read in two different places that it was a mandate without an opt out

But the Child can get the vaccine without their parents knowledge, right?

A minor may give effective consent for a hepatitis B vaccination. The consent of no other person is required.

This is confusing. Parents can opt out but students can get the vaccine without the parents knowledge or consent?

Too bad Bachmann wasn’t as worried about the veterans until the VFW went after her...I am sick of the gardasil issue..I want to know where the candidates stand on the UN, privatiziing soc sec and more...Bachmann will never be the gop presidential nominee. Tired of her one issue shrill which the msm loves. Bachmann voted for ethanol subsidies and slammed the veterans. She apologized and the republicans forgave her...double standards? All Gung Ho when it comes time to send our military to fight, Michelle Bachman is much less supportive when they come home…

http://www.armytimes.com/news/2011/01/military-bachmann-veterans-groups-012811w/

A proposal to cut $4.5 billion from Veterans Affairs Department health programs to reduce government spending has earned a quick, sharp rebuke from major veterans groups. Proposed by Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., the freeze in veterans health care funding — along with a cut in disability compensation for veterans also receiving Social Security disability benefits — are part of a $400 billion package of spending cuts that the tea party leader says could be enacted to avoid increasing the $14.3 trillion cap on government borrowing.

-- This is confusing. Parents can opt out but students can get the vaccine without the parents knowledge or consent? --

On the one hand, yes, it is quite contradictory. On the other hand, the law intends to give people control over their own medical treatment.

Numerous exceptions to this basic rule allow health care to be provided to minors without the consent of a parent or guardian in specific circumstances. Every state has statutes that embody these exceptions, which are often referred to as "minor consent laws," and many of these statutes have been in place for 3 or 4 decades.
Legal Basis of Consent for Health Care and Vaccination for Adolescents

The judicial interpretation of the minor consent laws concerning abortion, in Texas, tend to lock parents out. There is a series of Jane Doe cases where Alberto Gonzales, sitting on the Texas Supreme Court (with Priscilla Owen in a scathing dissent), performed what I think was a deliberate misread of the statutory law. After reading those cases, I wondered whether GWB would refer to both Gonzales and Owen as "conservative judges", and figure he would, at least in public.

The matter (Rollins/Bachmann attack on Gov. Palin)
cost her support here at FR and among conservatives.

Still, she is CORRECT on this issue against
rabid PerryCARE/RomneyCARE/ObamaCARE.

Your graphs are a JOKE.
They are also SPAM and made up.

RINO Perry is a RINO. He is NOT conservative
despite your silly graphical nonsense.

RINO Romney is a RINO, despite your silly graphs.

Americans have HAD ENOUGH of your cross-dressing
phonies who are fascists and impose governmental
“medicine” while driving REAL doctors out.

I thought I asked you to stop posting to me. I think you are stark raving nuts. I do not wish to interact with you. It’s bad enough that you post the same graphics and crap on every Perry thread on this site. We all get it, you don’t like Perry. Fine, just stop posting to me.

Ed Rollins is a bitter, vile, Conservative-hating piece of garbage. I always liked Bachmann and still believe she has done a terrific job in Congress, but the hiring of Rollins as her campaign mgr. made me scratch my head and turn away from her. It was the first of many mistakes of her campaign.

You are so blinded by fear of Perry that you are irrational.

As a long-time lurker, I know you are capable of much, much more.

BTW, your ad hominem attack earlier...any comment?

I know you...you can do better.

Right, that's exactly what Perry's done in Texas, he's driven out the real doctors. We've apparently just added tens of thousands of fake doctors over the past decade.

She is wrong...she is harping on it and making it a major issue of the campaign. Perry said he was wrong..Romney never apologized for Masscare. She is giving the dems enough ammo to tear this campaign apart. Sad thing is all the republicans and Tea Party folks are dwelling on it. You surely read my previous posts on Bachmann voting for ethanol subsidies and her proposal on veterans? imo Bachmann has gone from making a point to becoming a drone as the important issues fade into the background.

Hepatitis B vaccine is not just transmitted by sexual activity. It can be transmitted from a mother to infant or to husband, or other children in the household. It can be transmitted playing sports,, needlesticks, blood or body fluids o the eyes, nose. Heapatis B is a safe stable vaccine that I have been giving for about 25 yrstd.

That’s good. I was just posting an article from Red State.

Obviously they were not 100% correct.

Misinformation. Perry gets that a lot too.

Thank you very much for pointing that out to me.
