With the Arab Spring protests of the past year or two serving as inspiration, Twitter and Facebook has been used to organize a large group of protestors on Wall Street and an occupation of Wall Street is currently underway.
Twitter is currently also being used as a platform for non-attendees to weigh in on the controversy, with a steady stream of pro and against tweets either lauding the efforts or dismissing protesters as about to get bored and seek a Starbucks on their iPhones or burn daddys money. Web activist groups and collectives including The Other 98% (an organization lobbying for corporate and top 2% tax reforms and the like) and the formidable Anonymous have been linked with the protests- more of which are occurring in satellite locations.
One circulated statement urging participation said:
On the 17th of September, we want to see 20,000 people to flood into lower Manhattan, set up beds, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street for a few months. Like our brothers and sisters in Egypt, Greece, Spain, and Iceland, we plan to use the revolutionary Arab Spring tactic of mass occupation to restore democracy in America. We also encourage the use of nonviolence to achieve our ends and maximize the safety of all participants.
Currently, #takewallstreet has overtaken #occupywallst as a trending topic on the microblogging service and even celebrities are getting in on the fray. Roseanne Barr has tweeted on her feed, @therealroseanne, and rapper Lupe Fiasco posted:
If anybody needs me Ill be on Wall St: #iwilloccupy#occupywallstreet@OccupyWallSt@OccupyWallStNYC
Total headcount estimates for the event have not been attempted yet. The protests official site is located here. https://occupywallst.org/
The hippies own webcast, should you actually want wattch it, is here.
http://www.livestream.com/globalrevolution
Just a bunch op hippies standing around now, and faint sound of banging on a plastic bucket. They are whining that the MSM isn’t covering them.
One of the hippies don’t have a clue what park thry were actually in. Priceless.
That's what they get for scheduling their big event opposite a bigger media draw like the annual "Talk Like a Pirate Day". Arrr!
“Everything for everyone and nothing for ourselves!!!”
JasonCatlayst wants someone to GIVE him 4 acres and he will never ask for a handout [again]
I know libtards are stupid, but if he wants soeone to GIVE him 4 acres, isnt that a handout?
And I will take him up on that- Jason: I have 4 acres you can live on FREE AND CLEAR if you promise to live there and accept no money from anyone. If you succeed for 10 years the land is yours to keep.
Are you a linux geek?
LOL, it’s actually pathetic to watch. I think they’re chanting “Eat the rich, Feed the poor”....ooookkaay.
No kidding. I’m switching back and forth between the race in Chicago and the Tiger game in California.
Idiot is ignorant of the top 1% of taxpayers paying 38% of taxes.
The top 1% pay much more than the bottom 50%. Those that rob Peter to pay Paul can always count on Paul’s support.
Now there is some great leftist logic!
I thought it was cool you had to watch a car commercial before you could watch the global day of rage against the man!
Finally...a shovel-ready job!
Wow, cripplecreek. You have quite a collection of exploding leftist heads in your post.
Small town tea party events have more diversity than NY’s “day of rage”.
Total headcount estimates for the event have not been attempted yet.
Pediculus humanus capitisophobia?
In watching the live feed, here are some observations....
First observation there are a lot of white people at this rally. In fact, I havent seen much diversity in the crowd. Age range seems to be 20ish to 30ish. Lot of on-lookers.
Second observation they have broken the crowd down into smaller groups with mega-phones at each group and they are group thinking. Question: what is the main problem in America?
Third observation theme keeps coming forward of corporate personhood. Dollars have replaced our voice.
Fourth observation the Anonymous group just issued a warning to law enforcement. They said for them not to use excessive force on anyone, or we will come to their aid. And to the rest, they said, Quote: We are not as different as you think, we are you, we are anonymous, we are legion. We do not forgive, we do not forget, expect us.
Currently, they are marching around the perimeter and after that they are going to break for dinner at 6pm and then get back together. The crowd has grown, but it is difficult to tell how many are actual protesters, and how many are on-lookers. A roving camera has interviewed folks. One guy was a Ron Paul supporter, and one guy said most of the crowd is hard left, but if normal people would come down, it could be an effective situation. Of course, anarchists are out in force, carrying red flags. And some type of Spanish influence group is walking around with masks on that look like theatre masks. Im not sure what their agenda is. Overall, the crowd still remains majority white, tinted with olive, and very few of other races. Professionally printed signs are beginning to show themselves, but havent been able to read any of them yet.
At 7pm they will begin with another round of talks, which will be more educational in nature, one guy said. Also, at 7pm they are going to discuss renaming the park they are occupying and they are in the process of calling the corporation that owns the property, to make sure it is okay for them to spend the night there. (Thats sticking it to em! LOL Rather ironic.)
I guess they will be showing propaganda images on the live stream until 7pm. Thats what is on right now. Evil govt, evil military, evil corporations...etc. Progressive blather. There have been several mentions of world ordered socialism is a great thing.
Chants being yelled during march time...
Whose street? Our street!
The people united will never be defeated.
The people are we.
Eat the rich. Feed the poor.
What do you want? Equality. When do you want it? Now.
We are the 99%.
Wall Street banks, you get high, we can see your greedy side.
We got sold out, they got bailed out.
