Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann's story about a woman who claimed that her daughter suffered "mental retardation" after receiving a vaccine against HPV could fetch the woman's family thousands of dollars. But the family can only collect if Bachmann or the unnamed woman can prove the story is true.
Two bioethics professors have offered to pay more than $10,000 for medical records that prove the anecdote Bachmann told after Monday night's Republican presidential debate is true, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports:
Steven Miles, a U of M bioethics professor, said that he'll give $1,000 if the medical records of the woman from Bachmann's story are released and can be viewed by a medical professional.
His offer was upped by his former boss from the University of Minnesota, Art Caplan, who is now director of the University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics. Caplan said he would match Miles' challenge and offered $10,000 for proof of the HPV vaccine victim.
"'These types of messages in this climate have the capacity to do enormous public health harm,'" Miles said of why he made the offer. 'The woman, assuming she exists, put this claim into the public domain and it's an extremely serious claim and it deserves to be analyzed.'"
Bachmann told the story after she criticized opponent Texas Gov. Rick Perry for using an executive order in 2007 to mandate that all girls entering the sixth grade receive a vaccination against the Human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted disease that can cause cervical cancer.

Is something wrong with your cap lock?
I don’t think many Perry supporters can think clearly. They really are a nasty bunch.
You must scare easily.
Marilyn is Alan’s wife. She’s a song writer, too. Streisand just put out a record of their songs. I always disliked that song.
I’m certainly beginning to learn that. They seem to think Bachmann is their number one enemy. I suppose because she took him on so strongly at the debate and made him look like a little girl.
What scares me is I support the same candidate you do.
You’re certifiable.
Substitute Bachman/Palin with Obama, and gender/woman with race/black, and this is exactly like a thread from DU or some other lib website. The exact same smear, just different words.
I never thought I'd have to explain this on FR, but it is possible to disagree with a politician because of something dumb they said, like Bachmann and her retarded Gardisil tale, and not because of some irrational hatred of women. You discredit Bachmann by pinning a label on her, and you show yourself to be big on identity politics, which the Dems excel at these days.
The fact that you support Palin but don’t see a lot of misogyny here at FR really makes you far more certifiable than me.
We are through taking this crap. We have no version of the Mafia Mama Nancy Pelosi, and if we did this crap would stop.
We are making headway, and we are slowly getting rid of those lowlifes that behave like Democrats.
This is something that has been covered up for years, but no more. Just get the hell out of our way.
The old, “you aren’t a women so you can’t know” bullsh!t.
Get the chip off your shoulder and smell the dam% coffee.
Quit using gender as a freakin excuse as it just doesn’t play.
Tell me how playing the gender card is any different than playing the race card.
It’s funny, I was just reading another thread and it was totally anti female. I read it all the time on FR. I think there’s a lot of men around her who don’t like having to compete with women. I think they need to pull on their big boy pants and grow up.
Wow, Sam. You really tell it like it is. Great post.
Are trying to say that what someone posts on Utube is even remotely comparible to a scientific study?
Yuk!
LOL!
Sadly, have you noticed that some women join in? Right here on this thread there are people laughing about women’s “big mouths” and how to shut them up. Genuinely makes my skin crawl.
You know, I, too, make jokes about yentas and overbearing New York women. It’s a staple of humor. But it must be done carefully and not slop over into misogyny. Some of our posters here are fairly humorless and so don’t know how to calibrate jokes.
This was something that Jackie Gleason did so beautifully on “The Honeymooners.” He sent Alice to the moon but she always came back into his arms. But, he was a comic genuis and there ain’t too many like that here, lol!
Sam, it’s not coy. It’s COY. COY. COY.
Too bad, he was a huge talent, lifestyle did him in.
You’re not only despicable, you’re pathetic.
I’m personally ashamed to be in the same camp as you let alone the same party. Goodness knows where the paranoid, helpless, exploited mentality comes from but one must think you been watching alot of the View.
Quit looking for imaginary monsters behind every rock and look at things with clear eyes and mind.

Did you :
1) See who I was responding to ?
2) Read my caveat?
