Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann's story about a woman who claimed that her daughter suffered "mental retardation" after receiving a vaccine against HPV could fetch the woman's family thousands of dollars. But the family can only collect if Bachmann or the unnamed woman can prove the story is true.
Two bioethics professors have offered to pay more than $10,000 for medical records that prove the anecdote Bachmann told after Monday night's Republican presidential debate is true, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports:
Steven Miles, a U of M bioethics professor, said that he'll give $1,000 if the medical records of the woman from Bachmann's story are released and can be viewed by a medical professional.
His offer was upped by his former boss from the University of Minnesota, Art Caplan, who is now director of the University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics. Caplan said he would match Miles' challenge and offered $10,000 for proof of the HPV vaccine victim.
"'These types of messages in this climate have the capacity to do enormous public health harm,'" Miles said of why he made the offer. 'The woman, assuming she exists, put this claim into the public domain and it's an extremely serious claim and it deserves to be analyzed.'"
Bachmann told the story after she criticized opponent Texas Gov. Rick Perry for using an executive order in 2007 to mandate that all girls entering the sixth grade receive a vaccination against the Human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted disease that can cause cervical cancer.

Check to "Muawiyah"!
Regarding this “"Bachmann faux pas" issue having legs, despite what we here on FR think of its importance, we probably don't really have a major effect on the general public perceptions.
That has nothing to do with Gardisil, though, or with retardation.
No, I’m not the one who writes with crayons. My point was simply that your original post was poorly written and, therefore, incoherent.
This is the exact same logic the libs use when somebody white criticizes Barry Obumbles, except instead of hating women, that person is labeled a racist.
Congrats on acting just like a liberal. Well done!
but like my wife and most women.....when she had won the argument...she couldnt shut up.....
Oh man RVN, this just made laugh so hard, I almost fell off the chair.
Paperdoll......... did I see you doing the same as you are upset about here on a Perry thread or two?
Oh, is it different now?
The Merck studies actually have data behind them. A video has what? A guy with a camera?
The Merck report on Gardasil says there were 2 deaths by overdose/suicide. The crazy girl may be one of the 2.
That's enough to claim the prize.
BTW, my whole point here was that there are people ready to fly off the handle at anything Michelle Bachmann might have to say ~ and they will ~ and without bothering to get evidence. You folks are all too ready to crush her widdle head under your jackboots with no evidence ~ best you read up on this stuff first and then make your claims that Michelle got it wrong. Right now I think Michelle AND Merck got it right. Perry and the Perbots got mislead by the sound of their own voices.
Despite everything, don't despair. I think SP will play a big role in the upcoming elections. I am not sure whether she wants to run or not, but I am certain she wants her politics to win. Some way or another I ‘m sure she will succeed.

WRONG, on both claims.
Wish I may, wish I might...
http://www.drugs.com/clinical_trials/studies-gardasil-merck-s-cervical-cancer-vaccine-hpv-16-vaccine-component-gardasil-presented-7192.html SAYS “gardasil” and “merck”. I simply reported on the deaths. The severity of headaches is also covered in that report. What you don’t want to believe is that Merck actually reported EVERYTHING! It should be possible to BACKTRACK through the report to the data to the patient/test subject IDs and see if one of them ended up brain damaged or retarded, or dead (as a consequence of either phenomenon). Read the study ~ they paid good money for it ~ much more than the $5,000 they paid Rick.
So, it’s illogical to point out examples of woman-hatred by pointing out examples of woman hatred?
And people say Michele Bachmann is dumb!
You’re writing from Sweden! How cool is that?
You take care; enjoyed talking to you.
I have no respect for your opinion.
And people say Michele Bachmann is dumb!
Like I said, you're acting just like a liberal with this gender/race bullcrap. You're tilting at windmills you've created in your mind.
mobs really do come out when a woman sticks her slender neck out to run for office.
BULL!
Bachmann was doing nicely until she had her feelings hurt at Iowa State Fair and started pouting like a 12 YO and follow it up with an encore at Waterloo.
Most conservatives, including this writer, would love to have a strong woman to support, but they can not have an easier “Basic Training”, because the job is just too damn important.
Palin’s playing COY is what’s hurting her, and COY is another trait not well suited for POTUS.
Race? Who said anything about race?
Please tell me how I can “tilt at windmills created in my mind”? (Wasn’t that a lousy Marilyn Bergman song?)
I don’t mind sparring with people who can think clearly. But some of you guys appear to have been texting from the local gin mill in between lap dances.
“So, its illogical to point out examples of woman-hatred by pointing out examples of woman hatred?”
You’re scaring me.
Good!
