I was thinking of getting a 410 shotgun for home security

not too big, not too small.

Spray a nice wide pattern and you wont miss a thing and yet still do no major structual damage to your house

A little spackle and paint and probably done... (except for scraping up the nasty bits if you hit someone)

I was thinking of getting a 410 shotgun for home security....Get a .44 Ruger and six .410 shells. Doctor them just a hair and you have six shots available for home defense. Don’t try to go beyond 15 yards, cause it just stings.

Too small. 20 gauge or bigger, loaded with nothing smaller than #4 buckshot.

Wide pattern? Not at close range, which will be the distance with home defense. At 20 feet the pattern will be maybe 4" in diameter, if it's like my old Remington 870 12 gauge (cylinder bore; no choke).

This is life and death stuff. If you have to shoot then it's shoot-to-kill. Get an effective weapon.
