Still, the shots from his .357 startled the suspects... Understatement for sure! A .357 magnum has one loud muzzleblast, makes your ears ring if you're not wearing protection. Indoors? Mercy!

I was thinking of getting a 410 shotgun for home security not too big, not too small.
Spray a nice wide pattern and you wont miss a thing...
Too small. 20 gauge or bigger, loaded with nothing smaller than #4 buckshot.
Wide pattern? Not at close range, which will be the distance with home defense. At 20 feet the pattern will be maybe 4" in diameter, if it's like my old Remington 870 12 gauge (cylinder bore; no choke).
This is life and death stuff. If you have to shoot then it's shoot-to-kill. Get an effective weapon.
