. There was no need to resign. If she disagreed with McCain on some issues then she should not have acted as a cheerleader for those positions. Once she was the nominee, she was free to say whatever the hell she wanted to say. McCain picked her to be the nominee. She therefore had an obligation to be herself.
Face it. You’re reaching as hard as you can, and the fact that she said it when she was controlled by McCain makes it very likely, from a strictly logical standpoint, that it can’t be pinned on her.
