Sounds like a Southernism to me. “Young lass” would be an equivalent. To my aunt in Mississippi, “honey chile” applied to both genders.

It IS Southernese....I call everything and everybody “little”....when talking about a friend...”I love that little girl...or I love that little boy”...and they may be 100+ years old. This is just another silly reaction from an idiot.
