Do you know the story behind the meaning of that song?

I heard Guy Clark, the legendary Texas songwriter,tell the story at a show; It seems Richard Leigh (who wrote the song) had an old dog that he loved which developed cataracts, turning his brown eyes blue.

Crystal Gayle took the song and sang it as a love song, not knowing it was about a dog.
