Actually, it strikes me that sub specie aeternitatis it was probably not a matter of irony, but of grace. Whatever state the man's soul was in when he survived the original car crash, when he died he was making a holy pilgrimage in thanksgiving to God. Evidently he was meant to die in a road accident.
