where i live they speak spanish and expect businesses and government officials to speak spanish too.
Hell, we're way beyond even having Mexicans coming in who speak even Spanish.
Hundreds of thousands of Southern Mexico hill country Indians have come here, and they haven't even learned Spanish in 400 years.
And some actually think they'll learn English? They're nuts.
I think that's how it is all across the country. They're not being encouraged to "assimilate", at all. They're being catered to with every printed matter, all across the country. Heck, one national chain store I was at recently even paged the specials in espanol...just to make sure it was heard by all :(
