Although it has claimed 29 lives to date and flooded countless square miles of the northeastern United States, Hurricane Irene didn’t quite live up to some breathless predictions. Was this a case of “better safe than sorry,” or media opportunism?
On his Monday radio show, conservative talker Rush Limbaugh accused the news media of building up Irene out of their “desire for chaos.”
“It was a rainstorm and there was a lot of flooding and there were deaths associated with it,” Limbaugh said. “But they hype — folks, I’ll tell you what this was, was a lesson. (RELATED: Damage from Irene appears to be less than feared)
“If you pay any attention to this, they hype — the desire for chaos, I mean, literally — the media desire for chaos was a great learning tool. This is a great illustration of how all of the rest of the media in news, in sports, has templates and narratives and exaggerates beyond reality creating fear, so as to create interest.”
Limbaugh also said this “national embarrassment” had political implications.

Well of course this whole thing was hyped, the media was going to portray Obama as this great leader and then make the case for raising taxes on all Americans as part of the recovery of the East Coast.

I spoke with my brother Sunday (who lives in Cape May which was ground zero for this storm) and he claimed no visible damage anywhere. I live 40 miles further upstate and I saw no visible damage. We’ve had NorEasters that caused way more damage. We did get a lot of flooding though.
It wasn’t the hype AS it approached, it was the hype and BS after it hit and fell apart.
If it bleeds, it leads, we all know this. It isn’t surprising to see the media circus in overtime mode basically begging for a mass killing. Sharks gotta eat.

I get sick and tired of Rush’s naysaying about weather predictions. He should become a meterologist and get a job at the National Weather Service if he’s such an expert.
Don’t get me wrong: of course events of all kinds can be overhyped. BUT:
FAILURE OF THE WORSE CASE SCENARIO TO MATERIALIZE DOES NOT NECESSARILY EQUAL OVERHYPE-ation.

Further, Rush is wrong on the civics lesson here: Disaster preparedness and response is integral to both law enforcement and national security. As such, it is one of the few functions that the federal government is SUPPOSED to do.
What was on display, clearly, was the stark contrast between competent leaders, such as Christie and Bloomberg, managing Irene and total incompetent ninnies such as the Mayor of New Orleans and the Governor of Louisiana mismanaging Katrina.
I agree. I find it very immature that people are complaining that one ended up safe rather than sorry.
Not only was hurricane damage an issue, but had a few cities been severely damaged, there would have been severe law and order issues, maybe even civil unrest issues as well.
There was nothing about this that one could overplan for.
As for those complaining about being “ordered” to evacuate, please. All that means is that since the government gave a “mandatory” evacuation order, it is legally absolved from any damage you may suffer from your choice to remain in your home.
It makes me hopping mad to see people stay behind because they think they can ride out a storm and then, when they get stranded, some young soldiers have to fly a dangerous mission and risk their own lives to rescue that idiot off his rooftop.
In many beach towns, after the mandatory evacuation is given, the police go door to door with a Sharpie. If a person says he won’t evacuate, the police ask him to write his SSN on his arms and legs so they can id his body if it all goes wrong. And they tell him, no one will be coming out to help you until the emergency is completely over.

Are you saying that proves the hurricane was “overhyped”? That it could not ever have produced the damage that the forecasters said was a possibility?
