It probably doesnt take hurricane-force size wind to knock down a mall. And given that Irene is 500 miles wide, I imagine it could do some damage to structures 140 miles inland.
Well I'm not saying the mall didn't come down - it could have been a spin-off tornado.
But if a tropical storm strength wind knocks down a Mall - that seems like a problem with the strength of the Mall.

This might be a case of poor rooftop drainage. If the roof is your typical flat mall type and the drains get backed up or start collecting water for whatever reason, then the weight of the water could easily bring it down.
