There are plenty of higher windspeed readings from buoys in the vicinity. Perhaps there is a conspiracy by weather buoys to over-hype the storm.
4:30 p.m. Report from Wallops EOC: main base rain totals are 10.34 inches. Winds have calmed a bit. Sustained currently between 35 and 45 mph. Highest gust reported so far is 66 mph. There are waves crashing over the rocks on the Island but no severe flooding at this time. Conditions expected to worsen as the evening continues.
Winds on the open ocean are always higher than winds inland. I have left my dock with little wind, hit the bend and open ocean and find that it’s much windier than I showed on my wind gauge and the seas are choppy or rough.
