The Star-Spangled Banner may yet wave over Goshen College in Indiana, but no one's going to be singing about it.
The Mennonite campus is dropping the national anthem in favor of "America the Beautiful" before all sporting events, saying the latter song better represents the college's religious values and pacifist tradition.

Personally I would have voted for Randy Newman’s “Political Science”
No one likes us-I don’t know why
We may not be perfect, but heaven knows we try
But all around, even our old friends put us down
Let’s drop the big one and see what happens
We give them money-but are they grateful?
No, they’re spiteful and they’re hateful
They don’t respect us-so let’s surprise them
We’ll drop the big one and pulverize them
Asia’s crowded and Europe’s too old
Africa is far too hot
And Canada’s too cold
And South America stole our name
Let’s drop the big one
There’ll be no one left to blame us
We’ll save Australia
Don’t wanna hurt no kangaroo
We’ll build an All American amusement park there
They got surfin’, too
Boom goes London!...boom Paree!
More room for you and more room for me
And every city the whole world round
Will just be another American town
Oh, how peaceful it will be
We’ll set everybody free
You’ll wear a Japanese kimono babe
There’ll be Italian shoes for me
They all hate us anyhow
So let’s drop the big one now
Let’s drop the big one now
They can thank our brave members of the U.S. Armed Services for their ability to be pacifist.
Pacifists are hypocrites. They piously claim pacifism but live where others fight to keep them safe and free.
I'm surprised they didn't choose "The Ballad of Gilligan's Island."
Actually, I was pointing out the irony, that’s all.
I like both songs, either one works fine as a National Anthem as far as I am concerned.
I also respect the Mennonites for their choice of faith and way of life. While some folks here choose to point out that fellow countrymen have died so that they can practice pacifism, I would point out that they need to follow that thinking to it’s logical conclusion.
God Bless America.
Hey! That’s even another good idea for a National Anthem!
I’ve always liked Goshen College, ever since I first heard of it. It has a pipe organ tuned the way Bach tuned his. I didn’t even know that they had any sports teams to make playing the anthem an issue. As a private college, they do have the right to play what they want, but America the Beautiful isn’t the national anthem, and pretending won’t change that.
Do you realize that The Star Spangled Banner has only been our national anthem since 1931? Many people would like to have America the Beautiful for our national anthem.
Personally I am quite tired of the jazzed up versions of the Star Spangled Banner being screeched at the beginning of sports events.
Yeah, but would Jimi Hendrix sounded as good playing "America the Beautiful" at Woodstock?
This has been on my mind since WWII. It is difficult for me to accept that a group of people can knowingly remove themselves from the heartaches of soldiers dying to/who give them such freedom. They must have an explanation but I’ve never heard one that was not self centered. In WWII I recall some did serve as conscientious objectors to just combat.
It's not a law that you must play the National Anthem.
You are completely correct. They have a country to live in because the military was used to protect their freedom. They should honor the military by keeping the National Anthem.
It’s not a law that they get federal subsidies either. Speaking of laws, the current administration seems to be breaking the laws more and more. They are in bed with the Judicial Branch and corruption is the rule now rather than the exception. Who is policing them??????
holder is supposed to police obama.
Yeah, right.
