A veteran car thief who bragged about stealing nine cars in one day at age 14 told authorities he likes living in San Francisco because nothing happens to him when caught there, according to prosecutors in San Mateo County, where hes facing new charges.
Dustin James Barnett, 38, was arrested in Daly City earlier this year on suspicion of swiping a Chrysler just one month after being placed on felony probation for car theft.
Barnett had four prior car theft convictions when he was pulled over on Feb. 9. Knowing the Daly City cop had learned he had stolen the car, Barnett stepped on the gas and fled, running over the cops foot, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
The Chrysler was found a few blocks away, with Barnett hiding in the bushes nearby, police said.
Barnett pleaded not guilty to the allegations. During court proceedings, he has shown signs of insanity, Wagstaffe said. He wrote two letters alleging a government conspiracy and discussed suicide to evade the voices, he said.
On Monday, criminal proceedings against Barnett were suspended so that two doctors can evaluate whether he is competent to stand trial.
Meanwhile, the car thief who boasted about lax San Francisco law enforcement is out of custody on the Daly City charges after posting the $50,000 bail.
This is the main reason crime is so bad in America. The consequences are minimal. It may be more lax in San Francisco but justice is pretty toothless in most of America.
Liberals never understand this.
toothless to the amoral and unethical
to those with a shred of decency, criminal penalties would hammer us hard
of course, we’re also the ones that pay our bills, live within our means, and obey the laws of the country
liberals scoff at those ideas and see us as simpletons... as they find ways around the system instead of living within it
What unchecked liberalism has wrought.
This ain’t Dirty Harry’s san fagcisco anymore..
I have a solution that will discourage crime and keep liberals happy. Charge him with redistribution of wealth without holding office.
It must be interesting to be one of the “haves” in San Fran, dealing with the unwashed “have-nots”. While it is a unique city as far as I could see in my short visit there, it was nasty enough that I’d have no problem seeing it ever again. Living 10 miles from Greenwich Village, been there, saw that.
And with draconian fines for non-crimes, the gubbmint goons are after the revenue.
They know they'll never get a cent from the true criminal, so they don't even bother to chase 'em.
Be sure to sort your trash.
With the advent of fingerprint scanners and voice recognition software, there should be no such thing as a stolen car in the US.
We can put a six disc CD changer, on board navigation, and parking assist in our cars but we can’t do the things that would make them unstealable?
