There have been a bunch of little "pops" in central VA over the years. There was a mag 3 around Charlottesville about ten years ago, and I recall others back in the eighties. I think this is just an ordinary event. The fault system probably generates a quake this size every hundred years or so.

That said, I wonder what a thousand-year quake is like? Nobody was recording quakes in these parts before the 1600s. There could be big surprises in store. Hopefully we won't find out. At least not before I sell my house in VA. ;-)

There was a similar quake in 1897: Largest Earthquake in Virginia. Interestingly, they had aftershocks for about a week. As far as a 1000 year quake? DC would go back to being a swamp.
