I heard a great story in an interview of Buck O'Neil, the Negro League ballplayer. Jackie Robinson was on the team at the time and they were passing through an Oklahoma town that was a regular stop. They always stopped at a particular gas station run by a white guy, who was very friendly, but wouldn't let them use the rest room. Jackie got out of the bus and headed for the rest room. The guy said he couldn't use it. Jackie didn't hesitate and said take the hose out of the tank. Now that bus had something like two 50 gallon tanks and that was a big ticket. The guy thought about it and quietly said, OK, but be quick about it. LOL!
It's a crime IMHO that Buck isn't in the Hall of Fame. He has been an amazing ambassador for baseball and has been instrumental in preserving the legacy of the Negro Leagues.
The first thing that hit me about that book, and I told one of black tenants about the book, same thing hit her too.
"You mean they couldn't use the main bathroom, but the would COOK?"
Now that is just funny and ludicrous at the same time.
