Florida is not preparing (from my limited observation) because we are supposedly out of the cone....
..but I just have a bad feeling about this one....(not scientific I know!)
My dad's nursing home has stopped worrying....no evacuation plans....and they can only handle a level 1 hurricane.
I hope these forecasters are as sure as they seem to be.
Lives are counting on it.
They can - but this usually requires some other weather influence to push it around -- a blocking ridge that it can't break through or something like that. Before such things happen, the forward motion speed of the storm will slow fairly dramatically... often almost stopping all together.
Irene is looking fairly "typical" -- initial westward motion, turn to the north, accelerate to the north and northeast without any gimmicks.
I hope these forecasters are as sure as they seem to be.
Well, unfortunately, they aren't sure... they certainly know about the lives at stake, but this is obviously a science that has a lot of error in it... see post 297 for all the evidence you need about that (which could scare the daylights out of you).
I’m continuing with hurricane preps, just in case, but everyone seems convinced it’s going to miss us. The pictures sure still look like it’s headed here. Whatever, I’m ready.
