Immigrant woman seeks legal status after court victory

(CNN) -- An illegal immigrant who this week was awarded $200,000 in a lawsuit against a Tennessee sheriff's office will ask a federal judge to grant her permission to remain in the United States legally, her attorney told CNN.

A jury on Thursday awarded Juana Villegas the damages in a civil case against state officials in which she alleged that sheriff's deputies violated her rights when they shackled her while pregnant, while in labor and during her postpartum recovery. She had initially filed suit against federal officials, but the judge dismissed that part of the case. Now, her attorney, Elliott Ozment, says that he will ask the judge who oversaw the case to grant his client a U-visa, a special status that can be conferred on victims of crimes who are in the country illegally.

The U-visa would allow her to live and work legally in the country for three years, and can be renewed for another three years, Ozment said. During that period, she can adjust her status and become a legal citizen

“We think the level of misconduct has risen to such a high level that she deserves a U-visa for what she suffered,” Ozment said.

As a result of inhuman and “barbaric” treatment she requests a visa to stay in this country? Whats wrong with this picture?

She’s gonna make a great “american”. The slut has already learned how to play the system and picked up a cool $200,000. The biatch jumped the line ahead of other people who want to come here but are playing by the rules. America really does suck these days. The American taxpayers haven’t heard the last from this ho.

Arguably, the officials should not have shackled her while in labor. They should have been maintaining other security over her while she was giving birth in the jail clinic. However, the fact that she was shackled should not equate to winning a jackpot. She, along with all her anchor kids, should be deported... although maybe it would be best to deport the kids now, and wait until after she has served a prison term to deport her.

The policy towards illegals is insane. It’s even more insane when considering the amount of public outcry about the issue. Why won’t politicians enforce our laws?

She doesn’t need a U-Visa. She will stay here with her $200k (- lawyer fee) and live as she has been. She has proven being legal means nothing.

This repulsive POS should be deported immediately. Fugly too I’ve seen her photos. Bad enough she has dropped three anchor babies. She is laughing so hard. This primitive from Mexico just skates through our system without a scratch

Stupid Americans elected a Kenyan who opened our borders even wider and who uses Executive Orders for illegal immigrant amnesties. Americans turned lazy and lost our pride 30 years ago. Too lazy and stupid to defend our border and to demand politicians that would do the same. We allowed this POS called Mexico to invade us. In 50 years America will be a half mestizo Idiocracy. We will be like Brazil.
