Okay... the Pluto Hoax thing, also known as the Jovian Plutonian Gravitational Effect, was an April Fools prank done in 1976 on BBC radio by Patrick Moore.
Basic premise of the hoax was that an alignment with Jupiter and Pluto would reduce gravity here on Earth at 9:47 PM or so on that date [April 1].
Well, people fell for it.
No sooner did 9:47 roll around than the Beeb got calls from people swearing they felt the effect.

Oddly, there are people who actually believe it still.
Hence this belief that a tiny comet is causing earthquakes.

Now, Comet Elenin has passed at least four asteroids in the asteroid belt without doing anything to them.
Matter of fact.. here they are:
- February 28 with the asteroid 1999 TV67 at a distance of 1,774,707 KM [0.012 AU]

- April 7 with the asteroid 4336 Jasniewicz, at a distance of 1,119,713 KM [0.008 AU]

- April 19 with asteroid 2009 TJ9, at a distance of 325,428 KM [0.002 AU]

- May 20 with asteroid 1999 RQ176, at a distance of 338,403 KM [0.002 AU]

None were disturbed in any fashion by Elenin.
This is important because of the claims that the comet is causing stuff here.
[Some have claimed a shift in the poles of three degrees.. without proof of such.]

Now to get to the real root of all of this, we’d have ot go back to Hale-Bopp and the hysteria some groups had over it.

Ah.. Nancy Lieder... Proprietor of “Zetatalk”.
She claims to be an alien ‘contactee’ in touch with aliens from “Zeta Reticuli” through an implant in her brain.

Back in 1997 she claimed that the comet Hale-Bopp was a hoax, that it didn’t exist.
Her exact words were “The Hale-Bopp comet does not exist. It is a fraud, perpetrated by those who would have the teeming masses quiescent until it is too late. Hale-Bopp is nothing more than a distant star, and will draw no closer.”

They sound familiar, several of the “Comet Elenin is gonna kill us all” crowd have used similar words, blaming some vast conspiracy out to fool us.
Reminds me of C.S.Lewis “The Last Battle” where the dwarves say they won’t be taken in.

Undeterred she continued to make claims of.. wait for it.. Planet X coming to kill us all.
In May 2003 she said.

Well, we’re still here so obviously it didn’t happen.
But, at any rate, the Planet X is gonna kill us crowd is still at it, still grasping at straws.
And still insisting that things aren’t what they are.
And they grasped comet Elenin as something sinister.
Why?
Honestly, I haven’t found any single reason why yet.
But there are claims of alien space ships folllowing Elenin along, just like the same claims made by Marshall Applewhite of Heavens Gate fame did of Hale-Bopp.

But, according to the true believers in our coming planetary death, Comet Elenin is a brown dwarf or a neutron star, or it is being controlled and steered towards us, etc.

Some even state with a straight face that comet Elenin is a ‘brown dwarf’ that is ‘four times the size*’ of Jupiter.
*Four times the physical size of Jupiter would be many orders of mass larger due to Coulomb pressure governing the size of a gas giant up until about 13 Jupiter mass or so where degenerate pressure begins to take hold.
Even then, the object doesn’t appear to be much different in physical size to Jupiter.

But, those asteroids I mentioned above?
A Brown Dwarf would have consumed them, flung them off, or otherwise disrupted them horribly.
