You're assuming that these yoots know the difference between classy and trashy. For a majority of these yoots, the more gawdy the outfit/shoes/accessories, the more impressive they are to their peers. I have students who swear that there very poorly constructed Louis Vuitton knockoffs are real, and the pleather can be spotted a mile away.

When I said that they would have to do better than that to compete in D.C. I was referring to competing with the real crooks in D.C. That is, those in government. It was a joke.
