My grandmother was a wonderful cook and baker, but none of that talent made its way to her daughters or grandchildren. I'm not aware that she canned, but she did grow some of her vegetables and other edible plants in her garden. She made everything from scratch, although I believe she used Bisquick for her strawberry shortcakes, which I don't consider to be a fault. She also made a rhubarb pie using her own rhubarb, and an amazing lemon meringue pie. She was quite a woman.
I can do basic cooking. I actually make a very good roast chicken and a better than average omelet, but I prefer to microwave. :)

I make a variety of very large casseroles and a highly-regarded mango-habanero salsa. (Salvadoran cooks asked for the recipe!)
When the children (or the dad) don’t like what I’m cooking, I tell them to choose something else, put the ingredients on the list, and then make it!
