After refusing for months to say where he stood, Republican Gov. Rick Perry signed a Texas hate crime bill Friday that strengthens the penalties for offenses against minorities, gays and others.
The James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Act was named for the East Texas black man who was dragged to his death from a pickup truck in 1998 by three white men, including two avowed white supremacists.

Gee, what a timely article. Published on:
MAY 12, 2001
No agenda here.
Did his position on this change?
I could find no evidence of that, if I had, I would not have posted this article.
If his position has not changed, if he did not admit this was a terrible mistake, then it is fair game and should give us insight into how this conservative poseur thinks. It should also give you pause if you are or thinking about supporting Perry.
Quit being an apologist for Rick Perry and stick to being a conservative.

It's more some sort of vendetta with these guy. Long nights looking through every Liberal website trying to dig up dirt on Conservative candidates.
Maybe they are applying for a position at DU or Daily Kos?
Another apologist for Rick Perry pretending to be a conservative.
Try dealing with the fact that Perry never retracted this.
This is his history.
I know this must be disturbing for you, but he is not the conservative he is pretending to be.

So given this history of supporting/signing Hate Crimes Legislation, his history of extreme Open-Borders support, his history of throwing millions of millions towards a healthcare proposal that primarily benefited Illegals, his history of spending millions upon millions upon every feel-good educational proposal, what we have here is anothter “Compassionate” Conservative, a la, GWB.

I’m not sure how you bringing up these “facts” is going to help get a conservative elected and get rid of Obama.
Face it. Perry has a significant chance of being the nominee. Assuming for a moment he is the nominee, what are YOU going to do?
Support him?, Vote for Him?
Or Not vote, Or vote for Obama?
If you say you would support Perry as the nominee, then I hope you realize you are shooting yourself in the foot with this stuff.

You have talent for digging up info about Perry that is a decade old. Can you also post Obamas transcripts or articles or anything about his academic prowess? I think we have his voting record in the Senatepresent.
As I posted to the other Perry Apologists on this thread.

Lastly, what does Obama's transcripts have to do about anything?
False analogy that has nothing to do with this current debate.

Does the bill also have provisions for distringuishing hate crimes from love crimes or friendship crimes, and how to determine the appropriate penalties for each crime type ?

First, sorry, but I don't share your opinion concerning Rick "Open-Borders" Perry gaining the nomination.
Once the information of his checkered conservative past is fully vetted during this campaign, the base will turn away from him. He won't make it to the finish line.
Secondly, let's say by some twist of fate he makes it to the finish line; I'll have to make that decision then based on what else comes out about him. His Open Borders positions and support for Comprehensive Immigration Reform, however, makes it unlikely, because like GWB and McCain, he will be trying to push this over the finish line and this will destroy our country.

Hah. Have you heard the news out of Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Atlanta, etc?
The funny thing about this legislation is that it might as well be called the White People's Protection Act. At least there'll be something to use against these Facebook racist mob attacks that are all the rage.
We have a Lynching law in South Carolina that basically makes it a crime for a mob of people to attack someone who's outnumbered. No ropes necessary. You can probably guess the demographics of those serving time for lynching in South Carolina. Sad, bitter...but true.

Exactly. Some people truly are ignorant...
Ever since three white men beat the 49-year-old Byrd, chained him by the ankles to the bumper of a Ford pickup, then pulled him down Huff Creek Road in the early hours of June 7, 1998, Jasper has been almost synonymous with the horrors of racism. Byrd's remains were found scattered in 75 places along the twisting path that cuts through a pine forest. His head and right arm were discovered about a mile from his mangled torso.

“I can guess you dont like Perry, but why post a 10 year old story?”
What has Perry done to remove the law, if we all agree it stinks? In other words, as long as the law is on the books, it is fair game.

If you don't like him, don't vote for him. But don't go around posting old stories like it's todays news. Few things are more relevant concerning a presidential candidate than the bills he signed into law as a sitting governor, whether this year or ten years ago.
You can't get much more lame than pretending such things should be ignored by the voters looking for a candidate to support.

My post is relevant. The energy required to post two items (4years and 10years old) speak volumes of the intent here—is it that you want Obama for another term? If not, who do you support from the conservative side? Could it be, I don’t know, Palin?
Just what we need: internecine quarreling.

Actually, I agree with the above (even if I can’t stand Perry). When old (but valid) stories like these are posted, people should put a comment down to that effect (i.e., or put the year in parentheses).

Actually, if it was the LA Times, they’re praising Perry. But you’re right on the mark, except that you mention the year up front.

Don’t worry... “nuts” is the new normal.
Before this next year is over, I’ll probably be back to burying dead bodies under my house.
