Short term unemployment benefits provide people financial resources while the look for a new job. Extending unemployment benefits to 18 months or longer only encourages people to take their time looking for that new job. They do not create jobs. This is the liberal concept that spending money can be equated with job creation. If that theory worked, the Stimulus would have kept unemployment under 8% as promised. We all know how that worked out.
(RCP) I understand why extending unemployment insurance provides relief to people who need it, but how does that create jobs, Wall Street Journals Laura Meckler asked Jay Carney Wednesdays WH briefing.
Carney sarcastically responded: Oh, uh, it is by, uh, I would expect a reporter from the Wall Street Journal would know this as part of the entrance exam.

I am not a Keynesian by any means, but since 30% of the treasuries are foreign owned, there should be at least some stimulative effect. I.e., if the govt. deficit spends 100million, 70million of that is sucked out of the economy by U.S. individuals and institutions buying treasuries, but 30million flows in from abroad. Again, I’m not advocating it. It is terribly inefficient, and at best may have some very short term effects. There will have longer term negative effects that outweigh short term benefits anyway.
Ooh, ooh - and while we're at it let's raise the minimum wage to $100 an hour. That'll get things moving again
These folks are clueless.
File this under we're paying them anyway, might as well get some work out of them.
Unemployment bennies are a life ring to keep people afloat.
But someone has to manufacture and pay for the life rings.
If everyone is hanging on to the life ring and no one is left to pay for the new ones, then what there carney?
Amazing to see so many economic idiots all concentrated in one place.
These people are such liars that they believe their own lies! I have met a couple of people that were getting so much unemployment money that they rode it out all the way for two years before trying much to get another job. that is the selfish nature of many people which the government caters to...gets them in office often!
This is where these idiots are really spinning off into another world. The world where increases are cuts, and imaginary savings are counted as real.
True, giving people money to spend will allow them to buy food. Food that might not have been bought. So the people at the grocery store will keep their job. The farmer will be able to keep their jobs. That part I get, and I can understand how they “get there.”
But adding jobs? Are all of these people all of a sudden going out any buying stuff that would cause a company to add production people? Are they actually using unemployment checks to generate more traffic? I doubt anyone could make that case—except perhaps a liquor store.
It would just be better for the administration to say, “We have to give them extended benefits because there are no jobs to get, and if we don’t feed them, there will be riots.”
I might not agree with that statement (and I don’t) but I would understand their logic.
This is what happens when you spend all day trying to think how you are going to say something to sound smart, but not really think about how it sounds.
