The U.S. Olympic Committee is threatening to sue the Maine man who put on a unique sporting event last weekend.
Nearly 3,000 people turned out for the Redneck Olympics. The event featured a series of competitions and ended with the roasting of 12 pigs. But USOC officials say the organizer violated the law by using the word "olympics" in his event's title.
This is a story about David---in this case Harold Brooks of Hebron, Maine--and Goliath, the United States Olympic Committee. It all began last weekend on 200 acres of land near Brooks's home.
"We call it the Redneck Olympics, Pig Roast and Music Festival," Brooks says.
In video shot by the Lewiston Sun Journal newspaper, three men in helmets race lawnmowers around a track. Other contestants bobbed for pigs feet, drove

The USOC must really feel threatened. It must suck to be them.
Wait until the USOC finds out what one of the U.S. Senators from Main is named.
Good old rednecks.
“But USOC officials say the organizer violated the law by using the word “olympics” in his event’s title.”
How f’n ridiculous!!
Lets hope they can get a redneck lawyer to defend them, pro bono.
seems to me the copyright on that word would have expired about 2000 years ago...
Harold Brooks organizer tells about the call from the Legal Department.[my rough translation]
USOC is also suing a library/museum about Olympians.
Congress declared they could own the word--it's about the word, the word is the word..not 'the' or 'games' but the word.
"We are doing them no harm, its a word and if I go to court with them and they sue me and take my house then go for it..the word belongs to all of us..Coca Cola will get mad he was told..Brooks said, we used Pepsi..a bunch of people in Congress told a bunch of wealthy people [70's] they could own the word..we are working class people, even if something is legally, so doesn't always make it right.
"Because he has gone to the media they have to make an example out of him, says Brooks.
There was no confusion by those who showed up expecting to see the Olympics and Brooks said "No one will go to London and go, where's the pigs feet"
[Mitt, care to comment?]
I believe the word olympics far pre-dates the modern olympic committee, so I doubt they have any rights to the word itself.
Apparently the courts have ruled that the word is a trademark and they usually win these lawsuits.
Someone should tell them to change it to the “Redneck Olimpicks,” this would make it a lot harder for the USOC to sue.
An Act of Congress gave them “the word”..which I better not say as might get sued.

ah. sorry. i understand now. our wise government at work.
like the SCOTUS declaring plant food a pollutant...
So when is the government of Greece going to sue the Olympics committee for using a term that’s OVER TWO THOUSAND YEARS OLD?
If I remember correctly, the USOC once successfully sued a group of sodomites who ran something called the Gay Olympics.
