Speaker Boehner Announces Appointments to Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction
Washington (Aug 10)
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) today announced his intent to appoint the following three lawmakers to represent House Republicans on the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction:
House Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX)
House Ways & Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI)
House Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI)
Speaker Boehner has tapped Chairman Hensarling to serve as a co-chair of the joint select committee. Boehner issued the following statement regarding the appointments of Chairmen Hensarling, Camp, and Upton:
Our debt and deficits are a threat to our economy, and America cannot achieve long-term job growth until we take action to address this crisis. In the weeks ahead, a serious, bipartisan committee of lawmakers will begin the hard but necessary work of making the tough choices needed to rein in mandatory and entitlement spending, which are the drivers of our debt. The lawmakers I have appointed to serve on this joint committee are proven leaders who have earned the trust and confidence of their colleagues and constituents. They understand the gravity of our debt crisis and I appreciate their willingness to serve on this panel.
The two parties have fundamental differences about government and its proper role in our society. Where we've been able to agree, we have acted, and in a way consistent with the American peoples desire for a smaller, less costly, and more accountable government. Still, the differences remain, and so does the urgent work of returning our economy to creating jobs and lifting the crushing burden of debt that threatens our childrens future. This joint committee presents an opportunity for both parties to bring to the table their best ideas, debate them on the merits, and ultimately come together to do whats best for our country. With all thats at stake, I expect that the joint select committee will conduct its work in the open and transparent manner the American people deserve.
Boehner couldn't pick DeMint...he's a Senator, not a House Rep.
“You are entitled to believe whatever you wish but I STILL believe these are extremely goo picks for the committee.”
You know as well as I that no matter who was picked the usual suspects would be screeching “RINO” as mindlessly as ever.
See post 91.
This keeps him free to devote 100% of his time to his Budget Chair job speaking publicly about the debt...that's his strength.
Keep Ryan doing what he does best. I'm not sure arguing with Patty Murray is the best use of his talents.
“Even more than Obama, Boner and McConnell need to GO.”
What a load of crap.
Paul Ryan doesn’t want to get his hands dirty.
Paul Ryan doesn’t want to get his hands dirty.
I’m so glad Paul Ryan, Connie Mack and the other leaders who are serious about reducing longterm spending aren’t on this useless, ill-fated committee.
I have a very strong feeling that in his heart of hearts, Paul Ryan knows ( from experience ) that whatever comes out of this committee will be a waste of time and effort and will only cause GREATER ANGER and DISSATISFACTION in America.
He doesn’t want to get involved in that and doesn’t want his name associated with whatever the result will be.
One percent solution.
It’s not rocket science.
I just got onto the thread, but in case it hasn’t been said yet, Fred Upton is the man we have to thank for the outlawing of the incandescent light bulb. I hope that reading this thread will give me reason to be less dissatisfied with his appointment to the Unconstitutional Panel.
Excellent information on Fred Upton’s voting record. A more liberal RINO would be hard to find. Thanks for posting it.
I wonder how many new babies of conservative parents will be named Paul Ryan _____ during the next few years?
I curse that change every spring and fall, since I hate getting up at 5 am. So he's the one to despise for that, too.
Now that I've read the thread, my comment was pretty funny. The light bulb issue was mentioned about 25 times before AQ-come-lately arrived on scene!
Henserling is my congresscritter. Replaced my beloved Ralph Hall after redistricting.....
Our forefathers are rolling in their graves right now. Their vision of democracy is now being run by a “payout posse”.
Without slave labor, the politicians from both parties lose their own power and privilege.
No one is willing to speak on behalf of the tax slaves.
I do not trust Upton one bit. If he’s the seventh vote for raising taxes, we must defeat him in 2012, and replace Boehner as Speaker with someone who’s a better judge of character.
