Mayor Michael Nutter took a hard line against youth mob violence yesterday — chastising the black community in particular— from the pulpit of his West Philadelphia church.
“This nonsense must stop,” he thundered at Mount Carmel Baptist Church. “If you wanna act like a butthead, your butt’s gonna get locked up. If you wanna act like an idiot, move; we don’t want you here anymore.”
Nutter’s remarks were met with riotous applause as he addressed absentee parenting, peer pressure, and a sense of entitlement and disregard for consequences that seems to permeate teens who participate in violent swarms. The remarks came on the heels of the latest mob attack on July 29 in Center City, when two men were assaulted by 20 to 40 teens.
“Parents, if you don’t know where your kids are, you’re gonna find yourself spending quality time with them in jail,” he said, calling absent fathers “walking ATMs” and “sperm donors.”
“Please talk to your children because things are going to change,” he warned. The city said on Friday that it would ramp up enforcement of the teen curfew with a beefed-up weekend police deployment, and Nutter is expected to announce more serious measures involving both community groups and the court system at noon today.
Some in the black community agreed with Nutter’s assessment, but say extra enforcement measures aren’t enough to deal with the complicated sociological problems that have fostered a culture of violence.
“A black man may not have an opportunity to take care of his children. There are no jobs,” said security officer Douglas Jordan, 49. “More police will solve nothing. You have to get to [the kids’] hearts. Throwing their mom in jail ... is just going to cause more havoc.”
Silent majority
While Nutter admitted that “99 percent” of Philadelphia teens are law-abiding kids, he said the other one percent are doing irreparable damage to their peers — and to their race. “Some of them have made chains on our wrists,” he said. “I am forced by the stupid, dumb, ignorant actions of a few to take actions tomorrow that will affect many.”
“If you wanna be aggressive, we’ll be aggressive and we’ve got the biggest, baddest gang in town,” he said.

Mayor Nutter really read the riot act. Good on him!
And even the NAACP backed him up.
Good, good, good.
Maybe he can be the next Giuliani, and since he’s black perhaps no one will call him a Nazi or a Musolini.
Perhaps the left will try and insult him anyway, probably call him an Uncle Ton.
But he sounds like a man who will stick to his guns.

That is exactly true.
I know how to use firearms to protect myself and my family.
What bothers me sometimes about posts here on FR regarding the use of firearms is the bravado and over heated macho rhetoric such as "I'll give the whole Mob lead poisoning!!!!"
If you are firing into mobs on the street, then you have already lost. You will end up dead or in prison yourself. Firearms in your home to defend yourself from invasion are a different matter.
If you currently live on a racial fault line, and have a family to consider, you may want to seriously consider getting out of there.
That isn't a "racist" statement - but simply a reflection of reality in today's Obama world. If you are a white family, Eric Holder is not, not, not looking out for you. Urban mobs that feel "empowered" and "entitled" to violent crime, assault, robbery, rape, and murder are a shocking reality.
Sad reality is that, and I have been saying this for a long, long time is that we are very close to a second civil war. These “flash mobs” are one such sign. Plus with a very ARMED American population, blowback could very well happen.
I do add, if the trouble ends up going into the burbs, there will be some very hard learning done.
I realize they are demented—that living closer to a criminal area should make them want to pack heat, I’m just saying that’s how they “think.”
And that is why because of the taking “serious” of Amendment 2, other for these “flash mobs” incidents in the urban USA, you do not see the hororible violence that you over in the UK. There is a knowledge that, many, many Americans are ARMED to the teeth.
I agree. The more stories about perps getting shot (preferably dead) by would-be victims, the better. I have my doubts about modern, flabby American culture. John Wayne is dead. But who knows? Maybe we’ll regain our balls at some point, out of necessity.
