The GOP didn't ignore it. The 90,000 doors was by an outside labor group. The money thrown into these recalls ($25-$40,000,000) dwarfs everything both parties have to throw in.
The union folks have more free time and a direct motivation to fight this one out. The GOP and conservative groups have made their presence felt, too. They just don't quite have the resources Big Labor has.
