If it’s a New York Times poll, they probably polled 80% liberals and 20% Republicans. And the wording of the question was most likely leading in the extreme.

Trial Ballon. All it takes is for our side to stay on message, and it won't work. The TEA Party were/are the ones that said cut spending - the same thing everyone one else (except democrats) are saying. The dems are clueless - and now engaging in scorched earth.
