True story: When I was in my early 20s (20 years ago), my brother had a friend in his early 20s who was a real bum — lazy, smoked pot all day, sponged off his parents for his rent, etc. He was healthy and nothing was wrong with him but he was lazy. He and my brother lived together.

One day I was at their apartment and he came in with a big smile on his face and some “great news.” “What happened?” my brother asked, “Did you find a job?” “No, man,” he replied, “I just found out I'm eligible for food stamps!”

Michael Berry on the radio here in Houston asked callers one day to tell about abuses of food stamps, or the Texas equivalent, the Lone Star Card, that they had witnessed.

Several people told stories about how people had seen several Lone Star Cards being used by the same person to get huge quantities of food, which the person freely admitted was going to be resold from a fast food stand.

Two women were buying lots of bottled water, and then reselling it in the park to joggers.

Apparently, these people buy these cards from people in their neighborhood for 50 cents on the dollar. I suppose the original cardholders use the money for drugs or alcohol that they wouldn’t be able to buy with the cards.
