After hijacking an aeroplane and extorting $200,000 from the FBI, DB Cooper coolly made his escape via parachute. Forty years on, is Americas most elusive fugitive finally in sight?
The night before Thanksgiving, 1971, a man calling himself Dan Cooper, wearing a suit and raincoat, walked up to the Northwest Orient desk at Portland airport in the United States Pacific Northwest and spent $20 on a one-way ticket to Seattle.
On the plane, he donned a pair of dark sunglasses, ordered a whiskey, lit up a cigarette and coolly handed the stewardess a note. In capital letters, it read: I HAVE A BOMB IN MY BRIEFCASE. I WILL USE IT IF NECESSARY. I WANT YOU TO SIT NEXT TO ME. YOU ARE BEING HIJACKED.
What happened next would ensure Cooper a place in the pantheon of American folk heroes.

He stole lots of other peoples money, threatened and endangered dozens of innocents. Should we call him a liberal democrat?

$200,000? A fella could live large on that for two years! Quite a bit longer than that.
That would be equivalent to around $2 million today
In 1971 you could buy regular gasoline for around $ .30 cents or as low as $ 19.9 cents a gallon when there was a local gas war.
A pack of Marlboros was $ .30 cents, a new Chevrolet or Ford around $3,500.
The Dow Jones Average was 890 at the close of the year.
The 1971 median income was $9,000.
Disney world opened in 1971 and an adult all day pass was $3.50, a pass for kids under 18 cost $1.00.
The national debt was $424 Billion, and the minimum wage was $1.60 an hour.

“Butch Cassidy. . .” is a good film because the theme and storyline both revolved around the outlaws’ disgraceful end. The characters (in the film) were likeable but only in the context that their lifestyle was bad.

After QE3 and 4 you'll need more than that for a loaf of bread and to let your kids ride the mechanical racecar in front of the grocery store.

I talked to a NorthWest airlines guy years after-the airline gave him a training parachute-sewn shut so students could learn how to fold it. He used it to jump. Years later hikers found a few bills about twenty miles from where he roman-candled into something, found them in the wash of a stream. The serial numbers matched.
He’s dead, Jim.
