That is possible. A 98er in full meltdown is very uncommon.

If his account was hijacked, and he knew that already, you would think he would come back under a new name and tell us so, or contact the mods.

I was wondering the same thing.

On a denominationally-related message board, someone took my photo and made a late-night posting with some seriously damaging false information about my family using a name that appeared to be me but had the wrong IP address and came from a different state. It included enough personal details about me that the moderator didn't immediately recognize it as false, though he had concerns. Once I saw the message, several quick phone calls and an IP trace got the postings pulled.

These things can happen if somebody has the right information and is motivated enough to harm others.
